Five Spike/Dru fics

Oddly, though Spike/Drusilla is an important 'canon' pairing, it's very difficult to write. There's something illusory about the pairing - hard to get a handle on - probably because we saw so little of their 100 year relationship on screen but only its end. This hasn't stopped some wonderful fic writers from filling in the blanks for us over the years, though. Here are five of the best from 2008.

Boats Against the Tide by bookishwench, Spike/Dru PG13, set on Dover Beach and as melancholy and lyrical as Matthew Arnold's poem of that name, with a delicious twist at the end.



Tipperary by rebcake, Spike/Dru G. A look at what might have been Spike's reaction to the events of the First World War, and Dru's reaction to his reaction.

24 Hour Midnight, also by rebcake, Spike/Dru PG. The world's creepiest vampire couple do what I've wanted to do for years and visit the Ice Hotel. However, their little holiday doesn't quite go according to plan.

The Mad Queen of Cleveland by hello_spikey, NC17, Spike/Dru, Spike/Faith, Spike/Buffy. This story was begun in 2007 (when I recced it on buffyversetop5 as one of five best WIPs) and finished in 2008. Set in the author's home town, it's not only a terrific fic with great characterisation and dialogue, but features some of the best OCs I've come across in fanfic, a far more plausible set-up for the legion of Slayers post-Chosen than anything you'll find in the Buffy comic, and most of all a wonderful sense of place. Great stuff.

Crazy Madcap Redemption by hello_spikey, NC17, Spike/Dru. Set in AtS season 5, this story retells events during that season with the added complication of Drusilla's presence in the mix and Spike's determination to 'redeem' her. As you can imagine, mayhem ensues.

And finally a little bonus fic, because I think this story is sort of the prequel to Crazy Madcap Redemption

Can't by hello_spikey, Spike/Dru PG. Dru turns up on Spike's doorstep in AtS season 5. What will he do?

Love the title of #5 -- very apt! And a nice plus (to me) is that a good bit of Spike/Dru fic is historical fiction.

You are so very kind! I absolutely agree that the other authors you've listed did amazing Spike/Dru this year. However, I must pimp a writer that I just discovered in the past week or two: a_pretty_fire who seems to write Dru exclusively and it's fantastic stuff! I lurve her stories. Check 'em out.
