It's a Cake AND a Candy: Five Fabulous Art!Fics

It tells a story, using words and all, so it's fic, right? But the visual is so much a part of the story that it isn't really prose (or poetry). So, what do we call it? My first impulse was to call it F-Art, but that doesn't do justice to the skilled practitioners of the form. So, until I hear otherwise: Art!Fic. Everything on this list features Spike, 'cos that's just how it played out.

BIG NUMBAH ONE: The Attack of the Cookie Monsters by rahirah, PG, for cookie violence. This charming domestic adventure story is told (brilliantly) in the style of a children's picture book. I betcha can't read it just once!

TASTY NUMBAH TWO: Yo! It's the birthday of Calypso! by mere_ubu, PG. Does she even know what a super-genius she is? Let's not tell her, in case it queers the deal, okay? Anyway, Mere is using a time-honored comic-book format called fumetti, which is the combination of photography and word balloons. Boy oh boy, does she nail the form.

THRILLING NUMBAH THREE: Wedding Felicitations! by mere_ubu, PG. Almost as much fun as an actual wedding reception, without your Aunt Sally asking when you got so fat!

THOUGHT-PROVOKING NUMBAH FOUR: Birthday Felicitations! Salutations? Whatever. ;) mere_ubu, PG-13. Okay, this one is more of a naughty French Roman postcard, but it's totally worksafe into the bargain. Single panel comics also tell a story...

FANTASTIC NUMBAH FIVE: Hey! It's Rebcake's Birthday! by mere_ubu, PG-13, for naughty utensil usage. I'm totally biased here, but this one made me laugh the most. However, in the interest of fairness, just go to the doll!fic tag in mere_ubu's journal. To paraphrase Joss, I guarantee you literally dozens of minutes of fun!

I was trying to figure out which of her things to rec (no easy task), but clawofcat beat me to the International Phallic Spike Day, so I figured I'd better get going or my recs would be taken in other categories! I'm still kinda bummed that I didn't list her birthday greetings to zanthinegirl and phillips, 'cos Joey Ramone and cheeses of many lands? Hard to beat.

BTW, "Attack of the Cookie Monsters" may be my #1 favoritest (spellcheck be damned!) work of the entire year. The kid has a printed copy of it in a binder with page protectors and giggles over it on a regular basis.

"Cookie Monsters" is the first thing I ever put into my LJ memories. Which means, I had to figure out how to do it, first. Necessity is a mother and all that.
