I love Oz, and when he’s written well, it makes me very happy. Here are five fics that do just that…

No Cold and Heat by

idyll makes me tear up every time I read it because it is so damn beautiful - bleak, and sad with a chink of light in the clouds that makes my heart ache. Oz is rescued and now must find himself. There’s a hint of slash at the end, but really this is a story that’s all about Oz.

Recently I’ve been tracking down some favourite old Xander/Oz fics that somehow had slipped through the cracks of my bookmarks. I was really happy to revisit all of these

First up it's Kate Bolin’s wonderful The Curve of Your Lips Rewrites History. Post Graduation, Xander runs across Oz at a truckstop and offers him a ride. This Xander is emotionally all over the place and Oz is as serene as a werewolf can be. The scene by the lake and the aftermath will kill you every time you read it. Bloody gorgeous but not worksafe.

Xander/Oz was the very first piece of slash I ever read and while at the time the slash itself got me hot under the collar, as time went by I came to realise that there was something about this pairing that is truly wonderful when done well. To me, these five stories are examples of them done brilliantly.

The Summer Sun and That Boy’s Look by

entrenous88 is just beautiful. Oz looks out of the window of a bookshop and Xander is there. The imagery is this is just breathtaking and these boys will make you want to sigh.

1) New York by

drsquidlove: Xander is thirty-seven. Divorced. Two kids. 4000 miles from Sunnydale and his Hellmouth childhood. Also, straight. Only someone forgot to tell Giles. In fact... where the hell is Giles?

drsquidlove is the awesomest writer out there! She manages to hook so many fans up on her fics and she writes Xander/Giles! It's a hard pairing to sell, but she does it so well. I've always been a fan of Xander/Giles, but I've never been a huge fan of it until I read

drsquidlove's fics. She knows how to make an impossible pairing believable.

Also, what makes

drsquidlove a great writer is how her fics aren't just about the main pairing, but expand to their relationships with other characters which creates a very complex character driven story.

1- Steady by

entrenous88: Xander/Oz. Xander goes wherever the Council tells him to. then Oz is downstairs, and needs somewhere to crash for the night.

When compiling my favourite fics from this year I discovered a number that aren’t common pairings: Xander/Oz, Riley/Graham, Xander/Connor and Xander/Larry. It turns out these fics were written by two of my favourite authors (who always impress me):

mireille719 and

reremouse. I feel these two should be showered with love and admiration for their fantastic work!

1.

mireille719 - Variations on a Five-Paragraph Theme, Xander/Oz, Teen. If at first you don't succeed... Set in an AU in which Willow/Oz never happened. This story is indeed written as “variations on a five-paragraph theme” and wow, it works so well!

mireille719 is really successfully at experimenting with different fic formats and this is a truly awesome example of that. It’s very impressive how well she utilizes the format to add layers of meaning to the story. A wonderful and original fic. ( Click here for the other 4 awesome fics )

1. What's That, Boy? (You Say Timmy's Down the Well?) (Xander/Riley, PG) by

Sumary: Written for obsessedmuch who requested a future setting, happy couple, and a puppy. This is set rather vaguely in a future where evil is still being fought by our heroes; Riley heads up a demon-hunting/Slayer-supporting military-type unit under the control of the Council rather than the government.
Why should you read it? PUPPY!! Besides, Xander/Riley, in my reading experience, is an awfully cute pairing anyway ;)

Summary: Mysterious stranger with a warning to deliver? Haven’t we heard this one before?
Why you should read it: Because it's really lovely! No, seriously. Xander's definitely the world weary one here, and Connor's filled with feline grace and... there's snarking. It's yum.
