Yay for the return of [community profile] buffyversetop5

Here are five classic Buffy 'verse vids that I love. Assume that there are spoilers for both BTVS and AtS in these vids.

Life is Beautiful by starryeyesxx1. Possibly my favourite BTVS/AtS ensemble vid. This is 6 minutes of awesomeness.

  1. Forging Bonds: What can I say? I'm a sucker for a story that will make me believe an unusual pairing. This is Tara/Faith and it set in a universe where everyone's either a dom, sub, or switch. Tara's the dom.
  2. Bread: uses bread as a metaphor for Willow and Tara's relationship. It's just so heartwarming and beautiful.
  3. The Lamb: Tara works in a hospice helping people cross over when it's their time. Willow, last of the Scoobies, is brought in as a coma patient.
  4. Sapling: Willow, Faith, and three Jewish holidays.
  5. From Beneath You It Devours: Eee, a crossover with the Carmilla web series!

The Costume Codex is a lovely YT channel run by a costume designer who analyses the subtext of shows through their costuming decisions. All the videos are worth a look, but I really enjoyed this analysis from a few months back of Giles’s evolution in the Buffy ‘verse as it is reflected in his clothing choices - Our Man in Tweed; a look at Giles through costume.

Again, I'm mostly sure these people posted their first Buffyverse work this year, though it might not be the work I'm linking. This set has a lot of Willow and magic, and character studies that I thought were goshdarn excellent.

A Conversation by hereforthegay (Willow & Andrew, G, 659 w)
Willow and Andrew have a conversation in season 7. I am, like the author, not only here for the gay, but also for the other things they have in common and Andrew's tonal range of nearly simultaneous dorkiness and angst.

Or, Five of the Weirdest Stories I've Had the Pleasure of Reading This Year, and That's Saying Something, Because I Tend to Read as Many Weird Stories as I Can. Each of them has other things going for it, too -- they're not just surreal. Sorted from shortest to longest.

Comment: A Fuffy story based on a dream the author had. It's a coffee-shop AU, but HOW. :)) As a side note, I appreciate how many of the original canon Slayers appear here.

Some of my favorite AU stories from the past year, arranged from shortest to longest.

No Take-Backs (Buffy/Faith, PG-13) by [livejournal.com profile] brutti_ma_buoni. Dark AU, in which Scooby gang loses and the Mayor ascends and is now ruling Sunnydale as a big snake.

Bobby, Roger and Eileen by [livejournal.com profile] double_dutchess (Angel/Buffy/Spike). The most adorable resolution for those pesky Bangel vs Spuffy wars, that never cease in Buffyverse fandom. No one have to cry tonight, right?

[livejournal.com profile] femslash_minis has been around since 2005, and has led to hundreds of Jossverse stories being written. The pairings range from the popular to extraordinarily rare, and the tone of the stories runs the gamut from the lightest of fluff to the pitch-dark. Here are five classic stories from femslash_minis that I liked:

Salt on a Briar Rose by [livejournal.com profile] voleuse, Willow/Illyria, PG-13. Willow and Illyria exploring L.A., post-NFA apocalypse. Both women's voices are perfect, and there's more beauty and warmth than you'd expect under those circumstances.

Some of my favorite AU fanvids.
Cut by [livejournal.com profile] spikesredqueen - (Faith, Willow; R for drug use and blood). Dark all-human AU where Faith and Willow experienced pretty much the same things as in 'Buffy' canon. But in all-human 'verse it's even more painful.

Oh dear, another year where I read a lot of good fic and completely forgot to tag it so I could find it again, but here goes:

[livejournal.com profile] local_max's Making a Good Entrance and [livejournal.com profile] brutti_ma_buoni's Connected both take on "Chosen", from very different perspectives, and both end up giving me a huge smile while still making some interesting commentary on the show. We critique because we love.

Because I couldn't leave well enough alone and Lucy wrote way too many good things to leave off for just one post. The superlatives remain the same. More shippiness here than the last post. In no particular order.

"Lover, I Think We're Falling" (NC-17, Buffy/Angel(us), AU of Bewitched, Bothered & Bewildered, warnings for non-con) For the IWRY Marathon 2013 Very good, very, very dark, it reminds me if anything of [livejournal.com profile] snowpuppies's "Innocence (the if you love me remix)" .

"Shadows and Light" (Gen; Tara, Glory, episodic of "Tough Love") A look inside what Tara's thoughts, including her fears and the temptation to make it all "go away", during one of the most horrifying scenes in the entire series. Has a special place in my heart because Tara's heroism and sacrifice while she was tortured to protect Dawn is almost entirely taken for granted by fandom because she's a "good person".

"Wearing the Pants" (PG-13, Jenny/Giles, S2) Inspired by a prompt on <lj user=dragonyphonix>'s journal: "Jenny & Giles + pants". So much fun. Reminds me why I adored that pairing with a scene I wish we had seen, and could well have; once again, it reads like a scene that landed on the cutting room floor, thanks to crackling humor and spot-on character voices.

"Cut up Angels" (PG, Buffy, Faith, implied B/F, AtS S2 post-Sanctuary) - Another entry for [livejournal.com profile] kwritten's lady-love fest, this time in response to a prompt from [livejournal.com profile] ever_neutral: "Buffy/Faith: I don't like you human. You remind me of things I hate in me." Can be read as gen or shippy. Buffy visits Faith in prison. The thick glass that separates them is nothing to the barriers they've throw up between one another even as they crack and break.

"Just Another Small Fracture" (R, Willow/Spike, S3, AU of Lovers' Walk) In response to a request from [livejournal.com profile] snogged; Spike kidnaps Willow and things go...a bit differently. Simultaneously compassionate and disturbing, as it should be.

I freely admit to not reading as widely in the fandom as I used to. These days, I tend to stay in my comfort zone, which in my case, means I stick with tried and trusted authors. Very bad of me, and I hope there'll be more posts on the comm featuring new writers. But anyway, my tried and trusted authors are all very good and I don't feel guilty about reccing them repeatedly, so there.

So, five fics featuring Faith, all of them fabulous.

In Remission by [livejournal.com profile] quinara, post-series, PG. This was [livejournal.com profile] quinara's entry for [livejournal.com profile] seasonal_spuffy. Being [livejournal.com profile] quinara, though, it's very far from typical Spuffy (if there is such a thing), featuring an older and more careworn Buffy, a Spike who has got himself into a spot of bother (to put it mildly) while trying to be a good citizen (it's all Angel's fault really), and a truly fabulous, not to mention awesome, vampire Faith. I'd so love to see more.

Today I am celebrating the remix. The premise of a remix is simple. You take someone else's story (with their permission, of course) and write it differently. Disney films are an oddly great example of the remix concept, but personally, I think these authors do it better. These are five stories that mixed up this year and of course, each one has a link to the original that inspired it. (I'm not going to lie...there's a lot of femslash here.)

1) Same Strokes, Different Folks by [livejournal.com profile] brutti_ma_buoni - This Willow/Sandy tale is a remix of one of my stories, actually. BMB takes the original tale and turns it on it's timeline. She captures both characters extremely well and I promise she delivers a sting that will make your heart hurt a little for both ladies.

We all make mistakes. To err is human, as well as demonic. Lucky for us, laughing when other people blow it is one of life’s great joys. Following are five short and sassy examples:

Just look at the pairing. What more do I need to say?

Let's see if they can wriggle out of these situations... )

[identity profile] beer-good-foamy.livejournal.com
...that is, five fics that, as I believe the kids call it these days, "punched me in the feels" and made me think at the same time.

Unanswered and In This Garden, Verdant And Bright by [livejournal.com profile] snowpuppies. Two very different looks at what happens to Dana after "Damage" - because I'm just a sucker for good Dana fic, and snowpuppies is one of the best writers in the fandom.

A Quirk of Perkins by [livejournal.com profile] quinara. Making the most out of her retirement, Buffy has made it to the final of The Great British Bake Off. Now Sue Perkins has come to interview her at home, but gets a little more than she bargained for. Buffy/Spike.

Fuffy fans are not particularly active on LJ. There are several pretty active Fuffy forums and fic archives online, and the majority of Fuffy shippers spend their time there, or on ff.net. Still, there are wonderful Buffy/Faith (as well as Buffy-and-Faith) fics posted on LJ.

PG, post-Chosen. Sharp, insightful and deliciously funny exploration of a possible relationship. Deird1 proves that cute and smart aren't mutually exclusive: her story is sweet without being sachharine, funny without being overtly fluffy, sexy without being too graphic. It's all about the tiny details.

If you write in fandom, you know the ones I'm talking about. The fics that turn your gears, keep the bar high, give you new ideas about plot and style and characterization. The fics that make you stop at the end and think, "Wow. I wish I could write like that". And then you realize that maybe you can. Stories like these keep the torch paced to its journey, handing down craft and wisdom as new writers come into the fold. Each of these pieces have come to mean a great deal to me. Thanks for letting me share them with you.

Let's put the discussions aside for a moment and just enjoy what some fans have written, inspired by the new comic books – whether irreverently funny or dark and painful.

Netherlands to Nepal by [livejournal.com profile] stormwreath. Possibly the least sexy explicit femslash story ever written – and that's a compliment. Willow finds a way to help Dawn, but it involves getting naked and when your lover is 50 feet tall, there are certain... complications. Hilarious ones. (Willow/Dawn, NC17)
