Should we hold Classic Recs?
Sep. 30th, 2012 02:16 pmAs October is beginning, Top 5 is usually gearing up to hold its Classic Recs session over the Halloween weekend. Top 5 originally began as an annual challenge for recommendations to fan-created Buffyverse work. Thanks to user input, we expanded this the following year to include Buffyverse recs from any time period during Classic Recs, and later to all other Whedonverse fandoms during Worlds Without Shrimp, held in the first weeks of April.
However, as participation has been declining in numerous Buffyverse communities and challenges on LJ over the past few years, we've seen the same happen with the Top 5 sessions. While we intend to hold the annual session as usual beginning on January 1, we wanted to gauge user interest in holding the various different sessions during this next year.
So we'd appreciate it if our users could please take a minute to answer the following three questions:

Date: 2012-09-30 07:56 pm (UTC)If you included the Avengers in it, though, you might get lots of contributions.

Date: 2012-10-01 08:03 am (UTC)And maybe when you host World Without Shrimp or Classic Recs... have a ficathon so as to get the creative juices of those who write Whedonverse fic flowing... although I must say there is PLENTY of AVENGERS fic which is annoying for me as I haven't seen the movie yet. *ducks head*

Date: 2012-09-30 10:49 pm (UTC)I know I'm always pleased to see things that I may have missed, but I'll admit, my reading in the BtVS/AtS fandom has definitely declined over the past two years, and I've written next to nothing in the fandom during the same time.

Date: 2012-10-01 07:24 pm (UTC)In terms of combining the other two, I'm not sure that would be much help looking at the current poll responses. While neither session has a lot of people able or willing to contribute to them, Classic Recs has a lot of interest while WWS has a lot of disinterest.
However we want to run this poll for at least a week or so, so if there are other people who maybe haven't heard about Top 5 but would be interested in these sessions, particularly WWS, then that'll give them some time to find us and chime in.

Date: 2012-10-01 07:27 pm (UTC)But your problem's not unique. I'm still interested in finding and reading good things for various Whedon fandoms too but am not doing enough of it to be putting together posts for all the sessions either.

Date: 2012-10-22 01:49 am (UTC)I need some things to be explained more simply sometimes; I apologize for the trouble. (I've found that mentioning the fact that the reason is Asperger syndrome gets people pissed off at me, saying I'm "using [my] disability as an excuse" or "using [my] disability against [us], so I was reticent to do so...but I personally feel it makes me seem more of a pest if I don't mention it in cases like these.)

Date: 2012-10-22 02:09 am (UTC)So if you're searching Top 5 for recs you will find things from all time periods, but each open session has been for different things.
And it's not a problem at all -- we're always glad when people ask instead of staying confused :)

Date: 2012-10-22 08:54 pm (UTC)Sorry, that was rude, but...my Buffyverse/Angelverse ended with the shows, except while I'm reading someone's post-NFA fic.
One major reason I don't acknowledge the comics (and this probably sounds silly) is they gave Liam the surname O'Rourke, which makes no sense in the hierarchy of surnames back then.
But, I had already decided to end my canon with NFA anyway because I couldn't afford to buy comics; and if anyone wrote a fic based on them or had a discussion based on them, I just avoided it because it wouldn't make any sense to me. How fortunate are those who have money to spare on things other than toilet paper, soap, feminine products, and other necessities not covered by food assistance.
Sorry, it's just...it infuriates me how much people take things for granted, especially with the job market the way it is and gas prices the way they are. Trust me when I say the carpet could be yanked out from under your feet at any moment, never to be put back, and you will have nowhere to turn if you have no one to help you navigate through the various agencies people never tell you are there to help you.
