Five Spuffy Stories with human Spike. Some of these are AH and some are with Buffy as the slayer but all have a human Spike. (Some of these stories might be on sites where you have to be a member to access the story.)

1. He Came With the House by Cryptwarmer. All human.
When Buffy rents the house of her favorite celebrity to share a weekend getaway with her sister, she's surprised to find the previous tenant hasn't completely vacated it. Spike turning over a new leaf has sworn off cigarettes and young women but a chance encounter with a determined miracle seeker reminds him that happiness is about more than cutting unhealthy things out of your life; it's about having the bravery to let good things in.

Honest, I was going to try for a 5 fic theme but I was usually one or two fics short. So instead I am going to list five random fics. The only thing they have in common is they all have a slightly different twist and they are not all human AUs. Enjoy!

There is lots of excellent new Spuffy fic all the time, too much to rec all that's good or make any objective top list. So here's a semi-random selection of only a few recent favorites, from shortest to longest.

Or, Five of the Weirdest Stories I've Had the Pleasure of Reading This Year, and That's Saying Something, Because I Tend to Read as Many Weird Stories as I Can. Each of them has other things going for it, too -- they're not just surreal. Sorted from shortest to longest.

Comment: A Fuffy story based on a dream the author had. It's a coffee-shop AU, but HOW. :)) As a side note, I appreciate how many of the original canon Slayers appear here.

There aren't a lot of people still writing and reading Buffy/Angel fic these days, but the ones still active are very dear to my heart. Here are five of my favorites from the last 12 months:

1) Buffy works based on Al Parker illsutration by Laura Birdsall. A collection of earlier work, I particularly love the ghost Joyce watching Passions with Spike.

2) Moving On, Forward (Come in Lost Soul) by pushingcrazies features a pairing I hadn't seen before or even thought about before. A rewrite of AtS S4 with Jonathan and Andrew hiding out in L.A. rather than Mexico, and soon enmeshed in the issues Angel's team is having. Read more... )

It's always fun to come across a story that pushes you out your comfort zone as far as ships are concerned. Here are five rare(ish) pairings - I say 'ish' because one isn't really, but it's so awesome I had to include it! *g*

In Nairobi in the Rain by inlovewithnight, Xander meets a strangely familiar girl in a Nairobi bar and realises it is Fred, who died a few weeks before. There’s just something about the atmosphere of this fic that haunts me - it’s just lovely.

This way to more lovely stuff... )

Ships, I've had a few, but then again, too few to.... that's a lie. I can ship practically anybody, if the author can show me how it works. In these meaty, angsty, and plot-driven stories, the writers made me believe in an unconventional, non-canon pairing. (And one thruple.) There may not always be a ton of romance, but there are always a ton of feelings. All links to AO3.

Into the Dark Age by Sadhyl (NC17, Buffy/Ethan/Ripper)
Buffy ends up in Black Magic 1970s London, in the company of some familiar — if much younger than she's used to — faces. She hopes to stop them from making a terrible mistake. They hope for something a lot more basic.

A few more, with vampires... )

I love sparkling dialog, but a story without it can feel timeless. Most of these are about Slayers we haven't met before, but are fascinating in their own right. Links are to AO3, when possible.

The Queen, The Soldier by [personal profile] beer_good_foamy (PG, Gen)
Once upon a time, a long long time ago, there was a town. And in the town was a girl, who didn't want to die. The story of a slayer who did things differently when faced with a people-eating giant.

Four more exciting tales, and a bonus! )

Five (or really 6) Spangel(ish) vids, some serious, some funny.

Sisabet - The Bucket: This one just gives me all kinds of warm Spangel feelings. Not overtly slashy, but the subtext is oh so clear.

1. What I look for in any story is the emotion. Solshine's The Letters has that in spades as it reviews Buffy's evolving reaction to Spike's letters. The story also has incredible details: the unexpected elegance of Spike's script, the inelegant sealing wax as if he's defending himself against the emotions expressed in his letters.

2. The Scooby's watch over Giles the summer after he's tortured by Angelus in Gilescandy's The Watcher's Watch Diary '98. I adore how the kids stand together to support Giles when he needs them, even when he isn't willing to admit he needs/wants help!, and how each character's personality shines through in their entries.

3. deird1 does an amazing job of juxtaposing humor with guilt and grief in The Very Secret Diary of Andrew Wells. Andrew's personality shines through and his journal comments, such as listing an ongoing debate over the prowess of Batman vs. Spiderman as strategy discussions and morale boosters, provide a humorous background against the growing realization that something's not just right with the upcoming battle.

4. Eee! il_mio_capitano's Distractions might be only a drabble but it is brill. I don't know what to say without giving too much away so go, read, and enjoy!

5. And I know this isn't generally done, but the whole idea for this rec list came from me wanting to rec my story The Letters (the 84, Charing Cross Road remix) in which we see Anya and Severus Snape's relationship through a series of letters, e-mails, and wedding invitations.

So here's a bit of many characters, fandoms, and working on the formats ;)

1) Five Vampires Dr. Horrible Never Met by snowpuppies. Dr. Horrible has a plan to become more evil. Unfortunately, he needs the help of a vampire.

2) Foreign Spices May Disagree With You by AnonEhouse. Saffron's good at conning but some people have been running a way longer game.

3) Nine Rules for Living in a Broken World by Wisdom Eagle. Various crossovers set in the Dark Angel universe, though my favorite of these is II. Dance with your head held high with Original Cindy and Gunn.

4) I Hate You by double_dutchess. Sometimes it isn't a thin line, it's just hate between vampires.

5) The Director Will See You Now by toucanpie. What if SHIELD were responsible for more than just chasing down and sorting out the unexplainable? What if the fate of the world rested in their hands? (The Cabin in the Woods fusion).

1. The Heart Stone, by [livejournal.com profile] carlyinrome, (Kendra/OFC) is a tale of a budding romance between Kendra and an unforgettable OFC. It's short but manages to pack in heart-thumping action, humor, and all the feels in the world.

Who ever gets tired of icons, or amazed that we can still find new and interesting takes on images that have become very familiar over the years? Well, here are some that definitely caught my attention.

Buffy #10 by longerthanwedo. I liked the psychedelic, cosmic look of this icon. Also #14 of Willow and Tara looks particularly dreamy.

As usual, I can't collect five things in a particular category and time is running out, so here are five of my favourite fandom things from 2016.

First some wonderful fan art.

Venus and Mars by [livejournal.com profile] rbfvid (Restfield). This piece was inspired by one of my fics (of the same name) but that's not why I'm reccing it. I'm reccing it because it's beautiful and clever, and in all ways absolutely superb.

LJ coms are exactly that: communities. Places where we come together to share the fandom with people who are on our friends list and people who are not. Without communities, I would not have met a lot of wonderful people on LJ. I want to give a shout out to five +1 communities that brought fandom to our little corner of the world in 2016. (I simply couldn’t limit the list to five, so I’ve added a bonus.) This is also an expression of gratitude to the moderators of all communities who give of their time to create a fandom experience for the rest of us.

[livejournal.com profile] sb_fag_ends
Created in August 2010, this community promotes Spike/Buffy fanfic and meta up to 1,000 words in length (as well as limited postings of artwork). It's a great concept, especially for those of us who really enjoy the opportunity to participate in brief spurts. The community is moderated by [livejournal.com profile] bogwitch, [livejournal.com profile] quinara, and [livejournal.com profile] shapinglight. I have to say their annual Halloween challenge has been one of the highlights of my fandom year. As of the end of 2016, the community will sadly no longer have active mods, but it remains open for anyone who wants to showcase their work. Thank you for your contribution to the fandom!

Five favorite scary stories. Just keep in mind that some of these go with major character death warning. Won't tell which ones, because I'm evil like that. And because spoilers.

[livejournal.com profile] rebcake asked for pre-series fic focused on Darla or Dru, and I'm happy to oblige (though I doubt I can offer anything new to her). All stories rated PG to PG-13 (yes, I'm shocked, too!)

Traveller by [livejournal.com profile] selenak. Darla might not know the rules yet, but she had always known how to make men break them. Darla and the Master, in the beginning.

For [livejournal.com profile] chasingdemons, who requested some Spangel. All By Anna S.

1. Untitled --Melancholy, poignant, beautiful.

2. Sleepy -- Short, but it packs a wallop.

3. Gift -- "Once it would have taken force to drive Spike to his knees."

4. Untitled -- The L.A. gang discusses the relationship.

5. Untitled -- This piece just gets to the heart of who they are, and who they are to each other. Quite possibly my favorite Spangel story ever.

What's the Sitch

1) Top 5 is a seasonal recs community. We're open for posting over Halloween in October.
