Just a reminder to everyone that tomorrow is the final day for mixed Classic + 2021 posts. Saturday kicks off our 2021 Flash Forward weekend until we close at midnight UTC on November 2!

Feel It Still by double-dutchess. Just when you think that Buffyverse vids have tapped everything, here's one on Spike (along with Buffy, the most overvidded character) and yet it feels fresh and energized and modern. Read more... )

Happy Ace Week, folks!

Asexual!Oz in "You're Too Picky, Man": An Ace Reading of Oz's Character Arc in BTVS by Coyote (osteophage)
This is really well thought out, and I can't believe I missed this reading until Coyote spelled it out for me in an essay. Honestly, there's no going back for me--the way I see Oz is changed forever.

  1. Forging Bonds: What can I say? I'm a sucker for a story that will make me believe an unusual pairing. This is Tara/Faith and it set in a universe where everyone's either a dom, sub, or switch. Tara's the dom.
  2. Bread: uses bread as a metaphor for Willow and Tara's relationship. It's just so heartwarming and beautiful.
  3. The Lamb: Tara works in a hospice helping people cross over when it's their time. Willow, last of the Scoobies, is brought in as a coma patient.
  4. Sapling: Willow, Faith, and three Jewish holidays.
  5. From Beneath You It Devours: Eee, a crossover with the Carmilla web series!
dragonyphoenix: (buffy)

  1. Asylum: Buffy’s never left the mental institution and it’s a horror movie / series. I would watch the shit out of this.
  2. Ripper Opening Titles: If Ripper's backstory were a spinoff. Oh yeah, loved this video for years now.
  3. Ripper Trailer: post canon; ooh, looks awesome but might be too scary for little old me.
  4. Illyria Opening Credits: I just found this video this evening. It's so good.
  5. Buffy the Vampire Slayer: School Reunion: Asks the question what would Buffy look like if it came back now? It would look freaking awesome.

the really long ones ...
  1. Of Old Mystics: It's not a secret that Giles / Ethan is one of my favorite pairings in the 'verse. When Giles, now head of the Council, rescues Ethan from the Initiative, they learn they have a destiny. Prophecies, not only for Slayers, ya know? The two men have to learn to trust each other. Giles has to learn to trust his magic. Ethan has to learn to reconnect with a more natural form of Chaos. Ooh, and they get Slayers who are two delightful girls. It's just awesome.
  2. Tarnished: Trekker's one of those amazing authors who'd been gone from the fandom before I discovered it, but happily the stories remain. Than you Wayback Machine! After Buffy's death, Giles is stuck in some dead-end Council job, and then Ethan shows up, sort of like a cat really. And Ethan gets pulled into the fight against the First.
  3. Dr. Squidlove's New York: Divorced Dad Xander is so realistic. And the poor guy can't really explain to his wife why he refuses to let his girls take the subway anywhere. That's so great because obviously he'd be "No, that's way too dangerous" but it's New York. Everyone takes the subway! It's awesome that Giles has been trapped in some demon dimension all those years and nobody noticed. Giles sticks around in New York for Xander who is completely oblivious. There are rat demons and feelings and it's just an excellent story.
  4. Sands of Time: In season 1, Giles realizes how truly awful Xander's parents are. So he adopts Xander and so much changes from there. Seeing Xander acting like an excited kid cause he gets to go to a bookstore; Eeee! Oh, and grandma Giles. I love her. But there's still trauma for the poor boy to deal with. This one has a twist ending that is ... *jaw drop*.
  5. And last by definitely not least Indri's In the Morning of the Magicians: First of all ... *does happy dance*. I had no idea this was up on AO3 now. This is my head-canon for Ripper's and Ethan's backstory. There is no way anyone will convince me it happened differently. It's full of incredible and realistic characters, so much so that if Indri wasn't part of that electric koolaid acid groove scene in London, I'll eat my hat. As I've been working on this list, for each story I've been thinking that I need to go back and reread it. This one I'll be reading first.

Giles and Jenny switch up their usual roles for a change.

2 “The Edge” by TheSigyn

Spike and Buffy use role play and BDSM to overcome trauma in their pasts.

3 “Tradition and Protocol” by antennapedia

A dedication ritual between Watchers and their Slayers requires some painful experiences.

4 “Sanctuary” by DHW

A post-canon Buffy/Giles fic that puts Fifty Shades to shame.

5 “The Rough Stuff” by TheScholarlyStrumpet

Another Buffy/Giles PWP with BDSM vibes. What can I say, I clearly have a type. 😂

  1. Brave New World by kaydefalls refers to wish!verse where Anya asks "How do you know the other world is any better than this?" and Giles responds "It has to be." This vid asks the question: Is it really better? And the answer's somewhat ambiguous.
  2. You may need to be as old as I am to get The Odd Couple (Giles/Spike). It takes the opening audio track from The Odd Couple tv series and puts it with images of Spike and Giles. Gives a great suggestion of them as opposite guy roommates.
  3. I Belong to You makes a convincing case for a love triangle between Buffy, Angel, and Mr. Gordo (who is played by piglet).
  4. You'd think that playing the robots in Buffy against the song Robot Girlfriend would make for a light-hearted video, but Robot Girlfriend is actually quite poignant at the end.
  5. Transparent: Oh my Goddess. This Willow character study is just amazing.

There's a search engine designed for discovering old-fashioned little websites, and I took it for a spin with some Buffy search terms. Here's some of what I found.

1. (maybe cross the country become a rock star) by Amy (Giles/Oz/Cordelia, PG-13) in Loaded, the Giles/Oz zone of the BtVS Writers' Guild.
This was amazing. The mood and atmosphere of this story has aged well, by which I mean it gave me something like pandemic lockdown vibes despite being pre-2007ish and not about any kind of lockdown. There is a bunch of clever lines and a quirky, semi-absurd concept at the core of the story, which somehow connects beautifully to Oz's unmoored state of mind.

Let's wrack up those negative emotions, shall we?

1. Twelfth Sister: The Council's always known kill one Slayer you get a new one, but now they realize they can kill one Slayer and revive her. It's so dark but so beautifully written. I just love this story. Here's a snippet: "Because, gentleman," he replied, his voice now tinged with a hint of acid, "why should we simply settle for another Kendra? Why should we settle for just one, when we could have a dozen? When we could have a hundred?"

2. Falling Like Icarus: Oh, this is so sad. I don't want to give anything away so I'll just say Xander/Anya and share the summary: She'd come so close to the sun, to joy, but now her wings are melting and she's falling, like Icarus. Xander and Anya's world is shattered with just one word.

3. Extinction: A drabble from Open on Sunday. I'm not sure anything I say here could do it justice. Powerful.

4. Mission Accomplished: Poignant. The unexpected difficulty of a Watcher's last duty to his Slayer. I adore the juxtaposition of the explanation of this terrible duty in Watcher training vs. the reality of having to face it.

5. Blackout: A dying Xander brings his daughter to Spike and Angel. Every time I read this - every time - I cry at the end. This story takes a tragic even and makes it heartwarming.

dragonyphoenix: (buffy)

Let's meet some Slayers we didn't see in the series
  1. Geometry of Chance: Only Ethan could get his pocket picked and end up with a Slayer. I adore Frankie and any story that makes Ethan care, well, what can I say, I'm a sucker for that sort of thing.
  2. Chosen: Seven dark vignettes. They are amazing.
  3. Six Thousand Miles: Another dark one. Hard to say anything about this one because spoilers.
  4. Theses on a Philosophy of Power: I love this look at how unaware Watchers can be. It's set during the Bolshevik Revolution and the Slayer's a Red.
  5. Dreadful Duty: I still can't believe I'm convinced by George and Lydia Wickham as a Watcher and Slayer pair.

This list became unexpectedly difficult when two of the five recs I had prepped ended up linking to deleted accounts! That seems a high percentage in less than a year?

1) Five People Whose Loan Applications Were Approved At Sunnydale Securities Bank (And One Whose Wasn't) by beer_good_foamy. "So how does Sunnydale… work, exactly? Well, it's a long and complex story of corruption and denial, but let's check in with one of the cogs that make the wheels spin. Remember the loan officer who turned Buffy down in "Flooded"...? Here's his Sunnydale story in six installments, occasionally interacting with the main storyline." The devil is in the details, alright.

March Meta Matters Challenge banner by thenewbuzzwuzz

Dates: March 1 to April 1

For anyone who has ever created any meta, the March Meta Matters Challenge community will be running again to help keep you going (or get started!) on archiving your meta works on AO3.

While creators have often used multiple sites to host their works, one type of work has generally been left out of fans' efforts at archiving and preserving fanworks -- meta. In many cases, meta posts have not been copied anywhere else other than the location where they were first posted, leaving them hard to find and particularly vulnerable to loss.

So what if we can make a small dent in getting it saved? The March Meta Matters Challenge is focused on not just new meta, but making sure older meta gets a chance to be read and remain a part of fandom history. While new meta is also encouraged, the priority for Meta Matters is to make sure meta doesn't vanish with sites or personal accounts when those get closed or moved.

This is a month long event that kicks off on March 1. There are no signups and anyone can participate, as anonymous comments are enabled at the Dreamwidth community.

If you have any questions about MMM, look over how the challenge works, or visit our FAQ or leave a comment!

Our friends at [community profile] seasonal_spuffy are asking for participation in a poll to determine when the community rounds will be open. "We've been thinking that we might be able to save ourselves some work as mods, in a number of obvious and less obvious ways, and maybe even make it easier for all of us to plan our year, if we didn't make that decision anew for each round. The length of the rounds might change as needed, and we'd still have polls about themes and such, but we would always know when the rounds are scheduled to start.

So, if Seasonal Spuffy ran at the same time each spring and fall, what time should it be?"

I am happy to note that while this 15th session coincided with the potential loss of a very longstanding fannish resource, it appears now as if it's going to find a new home. I will take any hopeful sign in 2020 that I can!

If you haven't been on both sites or using our fandom's wonderful resource, the [community profile] su_herald, to keep up with recs in all places, Top 5's LJ community will be backed up to Dreamwidth in a few days, so all recs will be together there. Read more... )

1) Fiction Banners by teragramm. I don't tend to see these very often anymore unless a Big Bang fic is involved. I liked the sleek yet different look in these two works.

2) And I Won't Feel a Thing (The Rinse and Repeat Remix) by SegaBarrett. " Billy has everything he ever wanted." I like the fact that Billy having what he wanted doesn't change who he is, it's just the same steps to different music.

3) Vantage Point (Remix of Heights) by Corina (CorinaLannister). "Spike and Willow go on patrol together with Spike being the powerhouse fighter and Willow helping him out with her telepathic abilities. But who is helping who really?" I read this together with the original story (written last year) and found that it was the final lines in both the original and remix that stuck with me. Spike and Buffy as Heathcliff and Catherine is a little off to me, Angel being rather more Heathcliff-y. But then that says so much about Willow's frame of mind, she should know that. Spike reminds her, but she does tend to forget it.

4) Restoration by circular_infinity. Buffy & Angel's missing scene after her return. Part of what struck me about this story was the way Angel thinks of her with an artist's eye as he sees her again, "Part of her demeanor speaks of grief. It eases as she nears him, but it's still there like a layer of priming on a canvas."

5) Junior Deviants by Aadler. "Not everything fell apart in the last days of Sunnydale. Some things came together." First off, hardly anyone remembers or writes about Dawn's friends in early S7, especially since the show didn't either after the spinoff idea went nowhere. And this one has a nice surprise at the end. Second, so happy to see drabbles on AO3 since very few of them end up there!

Lastly, I didn't include this in my list because it's commercial not fannish – which in itself has become a harder thing to tease apart in these last 15 years given people's platforms on YouTube and fannish news outlets, Patreon and even commercializing individual websites. But I did find the concept of this quite entertaining: I've Never Seen "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" So I Watched The Pilot And Finale And Nothing In Between

I don't usually read WIPs, but I am making an exception for these ones, because they're just so good or because I know they're going to be good. I may be cheating a bit here, as several of the WIPs in this list were not started in 2020, but since they all got updated this year I think it still counts. There has been a ton of Buffy fan music this year. I recommend reading the video descriptions on YouTube as long as you can bear being reminded of the current affairs that inspired some of it. If you cannot bear that today, maybe skip the "Where Do We Go from Here" video -- it could be pretty painful. I also recommend watching the videos, not only listening. The visuals add a lot to the experience.
One of these is not a song originally written for BtVS (though it is part of the Buffy soundtrack, and that's where the singer found it), but the video is so soothing and delightful to me that I couldn't leave it out.

[personal profile] thenewbuzwuzz is a staple of the online BtVS fandom. She not only participates here each year, but helps run Seasonal Spuffy and the Sunnydale Herald. But one of her greatest contributions to the fandom, in my opinion, is her advocacy for poetry as a fanwork medium. I certainly never would have tried it if it hadn't been for her inspiration. Here are a few of my favorite buzwuzz poems.

The Limericked Adventures of Bob the Hellmouth Cop
This was the poem that started it all for me. It was the winner of a contest on the now sadly defunct Sunnydale Fanfic Club podcast and her episode opened my eyes to the potential of fandom poetry. (Actually, the podcast wound up introducing us both to each other's work, eventually leading to our ongoing beta exchange.)

The poem itself is priceless. Using the limerick format to explore the POV of a clueless Sunnydale cop is just too good. I mean, consider this stanza:
