I'm a big fan of fics where a well-timed spell, a friend stepping in to help, or someone asking the right question at the right time can solve a problem from canon.

Here are five short classic fics in that category:

1. Apotheosis by Ephemeral Night (Willow/Tara, General Audiences). Willow stumbles upon the secret for carrying out the Thy Will Be Done Spell in a more effective manner, and comes up with some clever and audacious to eliminate nearly every threat the Scooby Gang will ever face, and then takes it even further into the ultimate fix-it fic territory. Tagged as "fluff and crack" in AO3, and it's high quality fluff and crack.

I was trying to cull through all the 2015 [livejournal.com profile] slayerstillness entries when I realized that nearly half of the "top 5" from that comm actually came Challenge 39 "Love is in the Air" (the Valentine's challenge). So why fight it?  This was one of my favorite challenges/prompts from any of the icontests this year, in a completely "Can we do it again? Can we do it again?" way. Artists made icons of canon and non-canon pairings and everybody brought their A-game. So, herewith are 5 of my favorites from that round (with kudos to moderator [livejournal.com profile] starry_night for her inspired prompts:)

Once again, the list is ins alphabetical order of artists' names) and as with my previous post, I'll eschew my usual verbosity and let the images speak for themselves:

1) Buffy/Tara #3 (Please may I make a home in you?) by [livejournal.com profile] kwritten

2) Willow/Oz by [livejournal.com profile] rua1412

3) Cordy/Xander by [livejournal.com profile] sweet_lyri

4) Spuffy #2 by [livejournal.com profile] teragramm

 5) Fred/Gunn by [livejournal.com profile] tempertemper

I couldn't come up with any unifying theme other than "I liked these."

Moon Gods by pug. Oz/Willow, Rated Teen.
This is a gorgeous description of a few moments for Oz and Willow on a full moon night in Season Four. Pug has a really different take on Oz/Willow than I’ve seen before, using evocative language and imagery to create something stark and poetic and beautiful.

Willow is a fascinating and complex character to me, and I really enjoy fiction that reflects that. Here are five classic Willow fics. I'm going to be cautious and label them all not worksafe.

1) The Power and The Other Thing by [livejournal.com profile] mosca.Willow/Tara, Willow/Glory (not really the focus of the story) Gorgeous Wishverse story, with Nerdy Willow, Super-witch Willow, and Scary Willow all wrapped up into one. I really enjoy the way the characters from Angel were worked in. The tone is a bit chilly and remote and matches the world-building wonderfully. This is one of the most hopeful Wishverse stories I've read, but the hope seems earned. This is one of those stories that I think should get a lot more recognition than it has.

1. Shadow Thought It Be, by [livejournal.com profile] penwiper26. Giles/OFC.
In which one Elisabeth, itinerant academic and BtVS fan, stumbles into Sunnydale and can't figure out how to leave. Elisabeth is so fully realized a character, so rich in flaws and quirks, that I can't be bothered to care that according to the author this is technically a self-insert fic. The writing is intelligent and hilarious and wonderful, Elisabeth's frequent metafictional observations are great fun, and her gradual relationship with Giles totally worked for me. This is very much a fic that doesn't sound like it ought to work but really, really does.

I haven't noticed much Willow in this year's recs, so I figured I would step up and rectify that with a list of five Willow-fics I really enjoyed this year (all of which are not for the kiddies):

1) Sex 101 (Willow/Spike) by [livejournal.com profile] purplefeen:

How would any Willow-centric list be complete without a fic from the inimitable Feen? And this deliciously naughty WIP is a corker. Anya plays fairy pornmother and manipulates an insecure Willow into asking Spike for sex lessons. In the meantime, she also has a side bet with Spike. Want to know more? Well you'll just have to read this tasty and terrific tale for yourself...so go do that right now! Then beg Feen for an update.

Joss provided us with countless ploys to develop the universe he created: alternate dimensions, slayer dreams and memories, not to mention good old sci-fi technologies and, last but not least, characters worth exploring. Here are 5 stories based on unusual plot bunnies.

Nothing Ventured by [livejournal.com profile] shapinglight
One-shot, NC-17, between Hell Bells and Seeing Red on BtVS and post-Couplet on AtS. Spike visits Angel in LA and talks with him about Buffy without naming her. Angel thinks they're talking about Dru and gives him some advices... Terrific idea and masterful execution: sharp dialogues, minimalist descriptions, spiced with lethal irony. A character-study-cum-tearjerker-par-excellence.

1. Willow (1/1) by [livejournal.com profile] iwrotethat (PG-13/T) - Bits and pieces of Willow's life.
This is my favorite Willow fic. It's a lovingly crafted portrait, that doesn't make Willow too sappy nor too dark. The author has a wonderful understanding of the character. It's just an excellent study of Willow.
Freeze frame. Willow kissage. )

I love writing fanfic - LOVE it, but some of my fanfic I love more than others. Here's my top 5 of this year:

1. Jayne's No Hero (Firefly, Jayne) PG-13 - I love delving into the character's psyche and giving Jayne a bit more depth.
