Two well-researched products of international collaboration, two stories by people tapping into their own local lore, and a delightful joke oneshot.

(1) A taniwha from New Zealand, in Seek a Desolate Shade by wolf_shadoe a.k.a. Twinkles (Spuffy, NC-17, 23,737 words, complete)
The reason this list exists and the BEST THING EVER, because Twinkles is familiar not only with the folklore but also with its symbolic meanings in existing art and its presence in contemporary everyday life. And there's artwork. And this is thoughtful and magical and epic and fun. [ETA: I did want to mention that Angel is pretty evil in this story. Also, maybe there should be a sadness warning for parts of it... but still very worth reading, I thought.]

I was trying to cull through all the 2015 [livejournal.com profile] slayerstillness entries when I realized that nearly half of the "top 5" from that comm actually came Challenge 39 "Love is in the Air" (the Valentine's challenge). So why fight it?  This was one of my favorite challenges/prompts from any of the icontests this year, in a completely "Can we do it again? Can we do it again?" way. Artists made icons of canon and non-canon pairings and everybody brought their A-game. So, herewith are 5 of my favorites from that round (with kudos to moderator [livejournal.com profile] starry_night for her inspired prompts:)

Once again, the list is ins alphabetical order of artists' names) and as with my previous post, I'll eschew my usual verbosity and let the images speak for themselves:

1) Buffy/Tara #3 (Please may I make a home in you?) by [livejournal.com profile] kwritten

2) Willow/Oz by [livejournal.com profile] rua1412

3) Cordy/Xander by [livejournal.com profile] sweet_lyri

4) Spuffy #2 by [livejournal.com profile] teragramm

 5) Fred/Gunn by [livejournal.com profile] tempertemper

To Love is to Bury (Gunn/Fred, PG)

Gunn still pines for Fred in season five.

Tattoos and Memories (dead skin on trial)  (Gunn & Angel, PG-13)

Post- NFA, Gunn and Angel start again in this sad and touching fic.

Best Served Hot (Gunn/Dawn, G)

This is a cute cooking fic with mentions of Spike/Buffy and fun dialogue.

Cirrostratus (Gunn/Wes/Fred, NC-17)

A beautifully written and bittersweet fic about a poly relationship between the trio.

The Front Lines (Gunn & Robin Wood, G)

Robin Wood remembers Charles Gunn in this contemplative fic.

Who even knew there were any Faith/Gunn fics, right? What I love most about Faith/Gunn is the idea of them - two rough, urban kids finding meaning in the mission. They're similar personalities in many ways and, as most of these fics explore, understand each other and the lifesyle choices they've made based on the places they came from. Also, they look pretty together.

Unfortunately, I've run out of steam, so my reviews of are pretty sparse. This bears no reflection on the fics themselves or their quality.

1. Scar Tissue by idyll
Faith/Gunn, PG-13, AtS Season 4
Summary: Post-Orpheus Faith is feeling sapped. Gunn offers to be her distraction for the rest of the evening until she heads off to Sunnydale.

Review: A dance, a few beers, conversation and kisses sum up this fic. The lovely comraderie between the two resonates deeply as Faith tries to find her feet for the first time since being sprung from the Big House.
