If You Can Reach Me by SpuffyProductions (Buffy/Angel, Buffy/Spike) - And, boy, I'm not even a Spuffy fan. It's just that great...

Gift by Bisclaveret (gen, ensemble) - Because... is there a more perfect song for the buffyverse? I don't think so.

Howl by Shoopdancer (Angel/Darla) - Ah, Florence and the Machine! Another perfect, powerful song choice.

The Fiddle and the Drum by Gwendolyn's flight (gen, Wesley-centric) - Ah, Wesley... So moving and perfect...

Fragments by E^y (gen, Wesley and Illyria centric) - A perfect gem. 00:22 always stoles my breath away.

1) Untitled by [livejournal.com profile] coalitiongirl: Spoilers to #39. This fic is set after the issue. A heartbreaking Buffy and Angel ficlet that deals with the pain and conflict both of them are feeling.

I will say that if you adore Twilight and will hear nothing against it, you probably ought to pass up these recs, though I feel they are more humorous than biting....

1. Vampires and the Women Who Love Them, Part One and Part Two
Author: [livejournal.com profile] st_salieri
Rating: Worksafe

Why I Chose This: Using a clever television talk show transcript format, [livejournal.com profile] st_salieri brings readers a completely hilarious discussion between Buffy Summers, Sookie Stackhouse (from the Dead After Dark series by Charlaine Harrison, on which HBO's True Blood was loosely based), and Bella Swan (of Twilight notoriety).

I read plenty of light-hearted fare, but that’s not all I love in a fanfic. Some stories involve real-life issues, the struggle to make a relationship work, facing your own shortcomings, or just plain bad timing. Here are a few stand-outs from 2009.

Script for the new Buffy movie! by [livejournal.com profile] beer_good_foamy
Imagine, if you will, a world where both realities of Normal Again coexist. Time passes, and the world has been without its Slayer for 15 years. Imagine what she finds when she is finally released from the mental institution. Imagine Christina Hendricks as a 30-something Buffy! (Hey! I can dream!) PG

Lucky Me by [livejournal.com profile] millylicious - All – We all know Buffy's had a rather unfortunate love life, but it's never been so funny as it is here! Milly puts the vid together so cleverly you hardly notice all the work that went into it, because you're too busy alternately laughing and shaking your head at Buffy's, well, luck. Wonderful framing, lots of fun.

There's no proper title for this (I also had it down as 'Where's there's a skill', and other cheesy headings). The topic here is poems and fics which draw on something bigger than fandom, weaving Jossverse motifs into wider cultural themes, but never losing sight of the fandom audience. (In other words, they are very, very clever, but also hugely fun for fans).

[livejournal.com profile] quinara, Spikeid II and III. Because it's in epic iambic pentameter, and based on the Aeneid, and yet it's accessible, funny, touching and in-voice. They're heroes, dammit. They deserve this poem.

If you write in fandom, you know the ones I'm talking about. The fics that turn your gears, keep the bar high, give you new ideas about plot and style and characterization. The fics that make you stop at the end and think, "Wow. I wish I could write like that". And then you realize that maybe you can. Stories like these keep the torch paced to its journey, handing down craft and wisdom as new writers come into the fold. Each of these pieces have come to mean a great deal to me. Thanks for letting me share them with you.

Blood has always been an important element in the supternatural and magical context of the Buffyverse. As Spike says in The Gift, "It's always got to be blood. Blood is life. Why do you think we eat it? It's what keeps you going. Makes you warm. Makes you hard. Makes you other than dead." And, yet, on a show where blood was central to the conflict between vampires and humans/Slayers, as takers and givers of the substance, there was a limited amount of screen time dedicated to it. The following character studies delve into the symbolism and importance of blood on a personal level for both the human and vampire characters on the show. A number of these stories refer to or incorporate menstruation, so please be aware of that if the topic quicks you.

1. Grown by Prophecy Girl
Buffy, PG-13, assorted seasons
Summary: Buffy comes full circle.

Review: It's amazing how much can be said in just 425 words. This wonderful character study takes blood as the key symbol in Buffy's evolution from Girl to Slayer and uses it to dramatic and insightful effect. It seems that the nature of the beast is born from within.

I love a good post-apocalyptic scenario. I think partly it's the 'extreme circumstances' part, which allows for all sorts of interesting relationships and alliances, not to mention hurt/comfort. Partly it's the whole survival scenario - I love reading about that kind of thing, even though I, personally, want to sleep in my own bed every night. And partly it's just that sometimes I want some Doom and Gloom with my corn flakes, yanno?

I love rare pairings and this particular pair tends to come about under very specific circumstances - Buffy's death or absence. The wrenching grief that both characters share over a sister and a lover that they've lost is haunting and lovely, as are the inevitable comparisons made between the two Summers girls. The first three fics reach through the numbness of mourning and/or sacrifice to touch the fire beneath. The last two non-shippy fics explore the obstacles of timelessness vs. youth and mortality.

1. Departure by [profile] only_passenger
NC-17, post-NFA
Summary: A few years post-Chosen, Dawn lives with and cares for a post-traumatic stress disordered Buffy in Rome. When a trip to Los Angeles brings Dawn and Angel face to face, she must decide whose life she is going to live.

Review: It's hard to know what to say about this story other than it's amazing and possibly my favorite one shot ever. Pass writes things real and hard and gritty, and she didn't pull her punches here. This story explores the difficult realities of what it means to be a caretaker to an ill person, the stresses it causes, the sacrifice it takes. Although the fic is really about Dawn's journey as she makes her way in the world, Angel's presence is like the catalyst for a big bang. He's dynamite and Dawn has the fire to make him explode.

I took my time with Angel when I entered the Buffyverse. I didn't really want much to do with him. There was too much about him, for me, not to like. Layers of unlikeableness. Eventually, though, I came to realize that each layer was something of a scar. I mean, the guy has been around forever. He's bound to have amassed a few. And each scar had the potential to tell a story. These writings opened me to Angel, and I'm so grateful they did.

I couldn't think of a single catagory to list these under. These fics don't have much in common but they felt right grouped together. I've always thought each fic said something profound about the characters in them and I go back to visit these from time to time.

1.Stages of Grief by [livejournal.com profile] theantijoss. Angel's response to Buffy's death. (PG, AU)

2.Six Feet Deep by [livejournal.com profile] kita0610 and Jessica W. Spike/Buffy, Post-The Gift, R.

3.(r e) mission by [livejournal.com profile] elynross, Angel/Lindsey, R.

4.Stuck With A Mirror by [livejournal.com profile] thebratqueen, AU for the episode The Replacement, Spike, R.

5.Damage Done by [livejournal.com profile] chrisleeoctaves, Angel/Riley, NC-17.

Obstacles by [livejournal.com profile] shapinglight
R, future!fic, Spike/Buffy. When Buffy turns 25, her slayer power is gone. She's an ordinary girl, she can't fight, can't slay vampires. And, worst of all, Spike is so afraid to hurt her he can't bring himself to make love to her. Shapinglight ingeniously rewrites Helpless premise adapting it to Scotland setting and older Buffy. The plotting is smart and the voices are spot-on.
