I struggled to think of a category to post for where I could narrow it done to just 5 so I decided to just post my top 5 fics that left a lasting impression on me. As in can't-get-them-out-of-my-head-scour-the-internet-for-more-like-a-crack-fiend can't get enough of them lasting impression.
They are mostly B/A, cuz they are ship of win and my OTP but also a little bit of S/A cuz well, the pretty ;)
A Convenient Marraige by Gia.
NC-17
Buffy/Angel, there is a little bit of C/A but it is used to create B/A if ya get me? S'all good, I promise ;)
I actually have no idea how many times I have read this fic. I simply adore it. It was the first AU B/A story I ever read and still remains my absolute favourite. The Buffy and Angel we encounter here are so bloody right, they fit so well and watching them struggle against their feelings for eachother is utterly enchanting. The ensemble cast is perfectly chosen and are woven brilliantly into Buffy and Angel's story and the plot is thoroughly interesting. I literally couldn't stop reading it once I started and I don't expect you'll be able to either!
Oh and the smut is smuticilious :D What else could you want?
Phoenix Burning by yahtzee
NC-17
Buffy/Angel
I think there is some sort of law in B/A fandom that if you rec fics that this fic is mandatory, or maybe we should make it law? This is a sprawling epic, in every since of the word. Yahtzee creates a world that is truly enthralling in its own right, with original characters that jump off the page and gives Buffy and Angel something that they never got in canon, a chance. Forever really was the whole point ;)
I have read hundredss of fics, maybe more, this is the only one that I wish was canon. It's that good and an absolute sin to miss.
Elegy for a Fallen Heroine by HonorH
PG
Buffy/Angel in every way that counts
I have a thing for fics that unite the Scoobies and Fang Gang, I don't know why but I love them. This is one of the best ones. The AI team come to Sunnydale in the wake of Buffy's death. The characterisation here is an absolute joy to behold. The fact that Buffy is dead but still lives in every scene of this beautiful story is testament to the writing. I am not a sentimental person but parts of this fic gutted me. Angel's profound sorrow is stunning and dignified in a way that I think the shows betrayed. His relationship with Dawn is pure perfection.
Read it, bring tissues and feel better when you're done.
The Nature of the Beast by Jo
Waaaay NC-17
Mainly Buffy/Angel-Angelus, this is most definitely their story, but also Angelus/Everyone cuz he is a big Master Vamp Ho! ;)
Serioulsy, does fic get any better than this? This cycle is utterly absorbing and rich with refernces to mythology, literature and religion. It is as layered as the show itself. Jo's take on Angel/Angelus is probably my absolute favourite version of the character in canon or fandom. He is everything we want him to be and everything we don't. His relationship to all other characters, but especially Buffy ranges from disturbing to beautiful. Her use of Aurelius and his clan is a stroke of pure genius. It's dark, it's hard and it's passionate but the pay off is big...I defy you to find a finer series than this.
Vicarious by lynnenne
NC-17
Spike/Angel
It is ridiculous how good this fic is, seriously. Lynnenne's command over Spike and Angel is genuinely breathtaking. She sneaks us into the most intimate of moments between the two vampires. Her language is lush and perfectly weighed. Each word is measured and used to full effect and the omnipresence of our favourite slayer makes this fic pack a punch that you wouldn't necessarily expect. Simply put, it is beautiful.
Oh, and the pretty...don't forget the pretty!
