yourlibrarian: Angel and Lindsey (Classic Recs-eyesthatslay)
[personal profile] yourlibrarian posting in [community profile] buffyversetop5
As October is beginning, Top 5 is usually gearing up to hold its Classic Recs session over the Halloween weekend. Top 5 originally began as an annual challenge for recommendations to fan-created Buffyverse work. Thanks to user input, we expanded this the following year to include Buffyverse recs from any time period during Classic Recs, and later to all other Whedonverse fandoms during Worlds Without Shrimp, held in the first weeks of April.

However, as participation has been declining in numerous Buffyverse communities and challenges on LJ over the past few years, we've seen the same happen with the Top 5 sessions. While we intend to hold the annual session as usual beginning on January 1, we wanted to gauge user interest in holding the various different sessions during this next year.

So we'd appreciate it if our users could please take a minute to answer the following three questions:

[Poll #1869666]

Thank you for your responses, and feel free to expand on those answers in comments below.

The only comm I don't have any contributions for is World Without Shrimp, because I just don't like anything Joss has done apart from Buffy and Angel.

If you included the Avengers in it, though, you might get lots of contributions.

I think getting rid of WWS and Top 5 would only reduce the venues for good stories to be recced without gaining anything for Classic recs. Maybe the three could be combined somehow?

I know I'm always pleased to see things that I may have missed, but I'll admit, my reading in the BtVS/AtS fandom has definitely declined over the past two years, and I've written next to nothing in the fandom during the same time.

I keep detailed notes of what fic I've read, and I would be sad to not have the chance to share them. I find almost all my reading through recs and this site is one of my favorites.

Oh dear - couldn't decide what to answer. I always love the Top 5 posts as I use them to find things I haven't seen yet. On the other hand, I totally suck at having five things about which I know titles, authors and links, so usually end up not participating in terms of being a poster. If I promise to do better, can we still have our Top fives? Pretty please?

Yeah I think those projects should be added to the comm somehow?

And maybe when you host World Without Shrimp or Classic Recs... have a ficathon so as to get the creative juices of those who write Whedonverse fic flowing... although I must say there is PLENTY of AVENGERS fic which is annoying for me as I haven't seen the movie yet. *ducks head*

I haven't voted because I really don't know what to choose. I would genuinely hate for this community to become inactive, but I don't have any ideas for posts to contribute to Classic Recs this year, and I've not been reading very much in the fandom recently.

I agree with [livejournal.com profile] shapinglight that if you add The Avengers to Worlds Without Shrimp, you're likely to see a big upswing in activity.

See, I read lots, and I actually almost like the Classic Recs better, as there's over a decade of stuff out there that hasn't been in the spot light in a year.

Regardless of the theme, I have links to share. :)

Could you do me a favor and expand on this? I thought Buffyverse Top 5 was for all time periods of BtVS/AtS, so it is very confusing to me that there is a poll specifically asking if members want to include recs for classic Buffy.

I need some things to be explained more simply sometimes; I apologize for the trouble. (I've found that mentioning the fact that the reason is Asperger syndrome gets people pissed off at me, saying I'm "using [my] disability as an excuse" or "using [my] disability against [us], so I was reticent to do so...but I personally feel it makes me seem more of a pest if I don't mention it in cases like these.)

Current Buffyverse? Oh. You mean the comics. Bleah.

Sorry, that was rude, but...my Buffyverse/Angelverse ended with the shows, except while I'm reading someone's post-NFA fic.

One major reason I don't acknowledge the comics (and this probably sounds silly) is they gave Liam the surname O'Rourke, which makes no sense in the hierarchy of surnames back then.

But, I had already decided to end my canon with NFA anyway because I couldn't afford to buy comics; and if anyone wrote a fic based on them or had a discussion based on them, I just avoided it because it wouldn't make any sense to me. How fortunate are those who have money to spare on things other than toilet paper, soap, feminine products, and other necessities not covered by food assistance.

Sorry, it's just...it infuriates me how much people take things for granted, especially with the job market the way it is and gas prices the way they are. Trust me when I say the carpet could be yanked out from under your feet at any moment, never to be put back, and you will have nowhere to turn if you have no one to help you navigate through the various agencies people never tell you are there to help you.

No, by "current Buffyverse," [livejournal.com profile] yourlibrarian means fic that's been written in the past year, regardless of the era in which the fic is set. It has nothing to do with what part of canon a person is working from.
