yourlibrarian: Angel and Lindsey (AnyaTop5-kathyh)
[personal profile] yourlibrarian
1. Bittersweet Symphony by [livejournal.com profile] nicole_anell - All – Such a wonderfully nostalgic look at Buffy/Angel. They just seem so young and hopeful and tragic. They're ever hoping to change their roles as vampire and slayer to fit the outcome they want.

I Thrice Presented Him a Kingly Crown by [livejournal.com profile] quinara
Part 1, part 2
Finished, post-series, PG-13/R, Buffy/Spike. A spell sends Spike and Buffy back in time to the ancient Rome. Can Buffy's Slayer instinct and Spike's rusty Latin help them to survive and figure out who uses them and why? Writer undertakes a very interesting experiment - her citizens of ancient Rome speak Latin. This technique eerily reminds Joss Whedon's experiments on Firefly and Serenity when his characters suddenly start speaking Chinese. Whedon invites the audience to participate actively in interpretation of these scenes; Quinara follows in his footsteps but goes further and finds ways to make conversations in Latin more or less comprehensible - partly by making Spike explain them to Buffy, partly by using Latin words similar to English ones.

Sunshine by [livejournal.com profile] shadowscast
Part 1, part 2
Future Fic, NC-17.
Two tunnels diverged in a grimy subway.
And I, I don’t know which one the demon went down.
Well, shit.

- Xander Harris, with props to Robert Frost
Thirteen years after Spike had mysteriously disappeared, Xander meets him by accident in the London underground. Where has Spike been all this time, and what is he hiding? In my (highly subjective) opinion, [livejournal.com profile] shadowscast writes the best Xander ever; seeing her writing again after a year of absence was a great joy. In her new story she introduces a simple and effective plot device I never encountered before - a potion that allows vampires to walk in the sunlight for a brief period of time - and she ingeniously exploits the idea on both narrative and metaphorical levels.

Here are five entries that illustrate why I love my fandom, in no particular order, though the first one is very important to me personally.

For the last two years, I've been writing a long (oh boy, is it long!) fic called Age of Unreason, and I've had the very good fortune to have [livejournal.com profile] sueworld2003 as a collaborator. This first entry is another of the superb illustrations she's made for the story, without which it just wouldn't be the same at all.
