One more entirely fic-centric list; the final will be a bit of a grab-bag.

Top 5 Fics in Pairings with Which I Also Play:

Story: Dreaming of We
Author: [livejournal.com profile] femmenerd
Pairing: Buffy/Faith
Rating: hard R
Why: Because it’s simply gorgeous, perfectly-pitched Faith/Buffy, set in an odd bodyswitch dreamscape that tells Buffy more about her feelings for Faith post-Chosen than she may be prepared to know. Hot and surreal and passionate and full of beautiful turns of phrase and insights, building on the history we know as they face the unknown.

Story: The Evil That Men Do Lives After Them (series)
Author: [livejournal.com profile] alwaysjbj
Pairing: Wes/Faith
Rating: Up to Adult
Why: An intriguing look at Wes and Faith, on the run and on the edge—-with baby Connor along for the ride. A very different resolution to Wesley’s decision to protect Connor, whatever the cost. Dark, atmospheric, at times chilling and at others oddly comforting, it’s a wonderful exploration of the relationship and dynamics of a partially-redeemed Faith and a haunted Wesley.

Story: The Spike’s Will Be Done series
Author: [livejournal.com profile] talesofspike
Pairing: Spike/Buffy
Rating: Up to Adult
Why: I can’t possibly say how many times I’ve read through this entire saga, or how many more times I’ll read through it in the future. It all begins with Spike casting a spell rather than sleeping with Anya in Entropy, changing the course of everything that happens from that point on. The fifth book of the series is currently a WIP, but is updated regularly and near the end (for the unfinished-WIP phobic). I adore the way Tales weaves canon as we know it with original characters, old ghosts and enemies, and new foes, yielding intricate and original plots that feel completely seamless. She’s also crosses over with AtS, which just adds more fun to the mix, and she has a grasp on both action sequences and emotion that make this a riveting read.

Story: Into the Light
Author: [livejournal.com profile] jen_nsync_landl
Pairing: Spike/Buffy
Rating: R
Why: The ‘why’ is simple: it breaks my heart, even as it gives me something that I need—-Spike and Buffy happy, and together, and sharing a life together before tragedy intervenes. Dark and angsty (and I usually flee this level of angst as though it’s chasing me with sharp implements), but gorgeously structured and told, full of life and love and heartbreak and beautiful language.

Story: Collide
Author: [livejournal.com profile] enigmaticblues
Pairing: Spike/Buffy
Rating: PG-15
Why: Because it’s season 6—-still dark, still angsty, still big with the issues and the ‘life as the Big Bad’ theme—-but it’s somehow even better. Buffy’s slow road to acceptance of her resurrection, Willow’s power issues and magic abuse as part and parcel of the other, Xander and Anya’s relationship issues, Dawn’s feelings of abandonment, and of course Buffy and Spike’s good one moment/bad the next relationship are all explored in ways that make me absolutely giddy. (It’s still a WIP, but it’s updated weekly.)
