Here are some orphans looking for a category that would include a crossover, a continuing series, gap fic, a WIP, and Spuffy ::throws up hands::
(1) The Man Who Wasn’t There by
chase820 - NC-17 – Just so very good. Crosses over two of my favorite verses, QaF and AtS and manages some stellar stuff with a variety of characters. I’ve really been enjoying the Firefly crossovers I’ve come across, but in general I have a hard time getting into this genre. So it’s fabulous finding a crossover that can keep my attention and nail the characters to boot.
(2) Before the Time of Dawn by
shadowscast - Mature –I was delighted to see a new part of her continuing “Fragments” series. You don’t have to have read the other parts but I’ll bet you’ll want to after starting this one. This had me from the opening scene, and set a great tone in the first installment for a time travel adventure that revealed a variety of issues between Spike and Xander which I hope we’ll continue to see worked out in future parts.
(3) Seven Conversations Xander Harris Never Had With Rupert Giles - by
stoptocheer - PG-13 – I always thought the relationship between Giles and Xander was really underrepresented on screen and this fic slips in some of the conversations that must have taken place off screen at different points in the series.
(4) Sunday Morning Coming Down - by
crazydiamondsue - Mature - If not for dire circumstances this story was supposed to have gotten its final chapter already, and did get several installments earlier last year. It’s one of my favorite S/X stories ever. I love the bittersweet way it begins, I love the way Anya is dealt with and I love the way Spike and Xander deal with one another. If you enjoy canonically-based S/X, this is a great take on it.
(Though not a 2005 fic, I thought this might be of interest. Last year I discovered that Sue had been inspired to write SMCD after reading Without Ceremony by
elenabtvs. It’s gen, deals with Buffy’s funeral and is, I think, a wonderful look at the shellshock that must have followed “The Gift")
(5) Truth, like Light, is Blinding by
flurblewig - PG – I wish I could put together a category on “innovative use of The First.” What’s funny is the first time I saw it used in a clever way (cleverer than in canon anyway) was, oddly enough, also a story by flurblewig titled Under the Skin. Here she brings it to bear (this year) for a Spike/Buffy tale that addresses the question, why kill off Holden, your only witness to what Spike may have done?
