Top five ‘read behind the sofa’ fics.

What could be more festive than having the living daylights scared out of you? So curl up on the sofa, or hide behind it, and proceed with caution through the five fics that sent the most shivers down my spine...

Warning: Most of these fics are NC-17. All are for those with a strong constitution!

O, Little Breath of Oblivion

Rating: Mature
Warnings: This makes the list for gruesomeness - but there's bonus m/f shagging thrown in too!
Why it'll make you shiver: You can't beat the Unlife and Times of Spike and Drusilla for nasty, delicious little tales of horror. This is a short but far-from-sweet vignette in 1920s Harlem, where Dru concedes to follow the fashions of the age so long as she can spin them sideways in her usual macabre fashion...
Taster: She laughed as he thrust hard into her, the tendons along her arms standing out as she held herself up, long fingers gripping the hard wood, nails scoring it with long scratches.
In her own tuneless monotone, she sang under her breath, "Blacker the berry, sweeter is the juice."

Belief

Warnings: M/M sex, both consensual and not; blood and guts; VERY nasty goings-on. Not for the faint-hearted.
Why it'll make you shiver: There's an award site where the AU category is called 'Nothing Goes Bump.' This story's AU, but there is very little in it that doesn't go bump. Spike, a ghostbuster, and Liam, the unwilling owner of a haunted mansion and possessor of an elegant pair of angel wings about which he knows nothing, wind up going bump so loudly it makes the neighbours talk. But there is bumping in the night of a far less agreeable variety, too: Liam's home is teeming with ghosts. Ghost horses in the paddock, ghost dancers in the ballroom, and as for the cellars - the less said, the better.
Taster: He walked towards the doors, pulling the key out that Liam had given him and unlocked it, pushing inside. The place was huge and decadent. He’d never own a place like this, no matter how many ghosts he got rid of. He closed the door behind him, throwing himself into pitch-black darkness. He didn’t know the house well enough to locate a light switch on the expanse of walls, so he carefully stepped towards the blue tinged moonlight flowing through the thin high windows on the walls in front of him, at the top of the first flight of stairs. He slowly felt his way up the stairs from his dream, the house silent and resting around him, stopping to look out the windows. He could see the horses, galloping through the paddocks, mane’s tossing about like they were underwater. It was calming. He wondered if they even knew they were dead.

Working My Way Back To You (WIP)

Rating: Mature
Warnings: Scary, scary business.
Why it'll make you shiver: It's AtS5, and Spike's still hopelessly orbiting Buffy's sun, still lacking the gumption to call and tell her he's back in the flesh, as it were. Buffy, unwillingly forced out of retirement in England by a series of disturbing slayer dreams, is about to get another blast from the past: Spike's not the only one back from the void. Perfect for those who like their horror with a side of heart-rending, knife-in-the-guts Spuffy.
Taster: The churchyard had been well kept and it was trimmed and neat, but the quiet serenity was deceiving. The more she looked, the more she found evidence of struggle; a cracked headstone that had seen a great impact and which crumbled at her touch; areas of the path where the rough gravel had been raked up into shallow furrows of pebbles and loose sand by desperate fingers scrabbling for freedom; a dark sinister trail that lead towards the wide stone porch. Blood had been spilt there, and a significant amount too, judging by the thick splatter that stained the mighty church doors and the flecks that marked the nearby headstones. A hand, the palm wide and open, had smeared blood onto the glass that framed the order of services, leaving a fuzzy primeval print as its owner’s epitaph. Dried to a dark umber where it was heaviest, large patches of orangey-red smudges washed the flagstones of the porch with violence. No one living had sought sanctuary here and survived.

Best Served Cold

Rating: Extra-mature! Heh
Warnings: Taken from the author's notes: "This one has the lot - non-graphic torture, non-con sex, enemas, objectification of vampires." Hee!
Why it'll make you shiver: Angel issues Giles a surprise invitation during AtS1. It's the incredibly subtle, understated way this ficlet slides into horror that'll leave your skin creeping.
Taster: It was a little hard to find one that wouldn't spoil the plot, but this is a great scene-setter: Like the living room, the bathroom was lit by candles, their wild flickering sending shadows racing over the walls, distorting even further the already bizarre picture that confronted Giles. Angel was kneeling next to the bath, which was full of water in which the candlelight danced in a hypnotic and oddly intense way, and on a mat on the floor between him and Giles was a naked figure.

Down There In The Reeperbahn
By [livejournal.com profile] tkp
Rating: tkp rated it R, but I think she can't quite believe she got away with that :)
Warnings: Non-graphic rape and paedophilia. But it is totally non-graphic.
Why it'll make you shiver: Have you noticed how macabre nursery-rhymes are? Drusilla has. The nastiest possible happenings filtered through this broken-up, nursery-rhyme Dru-speak prose. Like nothing else I've ever read. And scary as all get-out.
Taster: Lift your skirts ladies, when walking the Reeperbahn; the cobblestones, they’re infants’ heads. Heels go clickety-clack to tap them flat, and a face disappears from a window.
