By virtue of the fact, that I'm a timezone way ahead, I'm kicking things off with my top five gen fics* (that is, non-romantic pairing fics) of 2005.
My Top 5 Gen Fics of 2005
Item Title or Description: Am I Out Of It?
Creator’s Name:
karabair
Rating: PG-13

Why I chose this: Putting Lilah and Harmony together? Just genius. Throughout the fic each tries to work the other out in their own inimitable style. All this takes place in a very hot place at the leisure of Wolfram and Hart. Heeee.
Item Title or Description:Carry On My Wayward Son
Creator’s Name:
amybnnyc
Rating:Rated PG-13

Why I chose this: A beautiful study into what makes a father, and what makes a son, but interweaving Angel(us), Holtz, Liam’s father and Connor thoughout and how we are doomed to repeat our mistakes. There is so much in this fic – language, imagery, canon and character study - to take away, ponder and savour.
Item Title or Description: Dead Kings
Creator’s Name:
sage_theory
Rating: PG-13/R
Warnings: Violence

Why I chose this: This is one of those fics to get lost in. Wonderful language and imagery use and a combination of two characters that share a lot of history, but never having actually met. Plus the added bonus of the fic taking two characters prone to darkness which adds a richness and intensity that is quite special.
Item Title or Description: Something Like
Creator’s Name:
semby
Rating: Suitable for most readers

Why I chose this: Dawn is one of those characters who’s been markedly redeemed for me through fanfic. And this fic is a great example of why. Semby gets to the heart of what *makes* Dawn, her insecurities, her loyalty, why she was and how she may grow in the future. A really interesting character study.
Item Title or Description: The Sunnydale Tragedy
Creator’s Name:
spikendru
Rating: PG

Why I chose this: I enjoyed that this fic was about Buffy and Dawn, and how they developed on their own and as sisters. The changing narrative worked well to show insights into Dawn and Buffy and how they viewed each other. But what also intrigued me was how the fic broadened out to encompass Buffy’s relationships with both Angel and Spike and how she came to a place of acceptance about the two of them.
*These don't include Spike or Wes, because I *may* have lists for them on their own.
