Five fantastic 2016 works of fan art/video
Jan. 6th, 2017 11:08 pmThere were so many amazing fanworks in 2016 that I wish I'd taken better notes! Off the top of my head, I give you five fantastic pieces of artwork from five artists:
Artwork: Mr. Trick
By
chasingdemons
The hardest part was picking only one image by the amazing Danna. But! I don't think I've ever seen another artwork of Mr. Trick! I couldn't be happier seeing this fashionable, retro glamor shot of Mr. Trick, a minor yet memorable BtVS demon. (Who alone, as a bonus, commented on the unnatural lack of POC in this supposedly SoCal town. Joss, was that your conscience speaking?) Anyway, this artwork is just gorgeous! (Also, whatever skincare regimen Mr. Trick's using to get that glowing-from-within look, I want it.) ;)
Artwork: Too Cool for Cats
By

Restfield is clearly a cat person, and this image of Spike with a cute kitten makes me squee so hard! There's something very James Dean about Spike's look, softened by the tiny fluffball on his shoulder making eye contact with the viewer (breaking the fourth wall?). I could say something about the moody atmosphere with chiaroscuro lighting to impress you with my words, or I could just point you to the image link (see above) so that you can be impressed by Restfield's artwork. :)
Artwork: "Always On My Mind"
By
teragramm
Browsing teragramm's collection of icons and banners makes me feel like a kid in a candy store every time. (See my icon which she even personalized for me.) I especially love this piece on my favourite couple she did for
seasonal_spuffy, "Always On My Mind". A perfect use of ambiguity: who's always on whose mind? Also, I love artworks based on the comics, where our beloved Buffyverse characters are still fighting the good fight. (From the provided link, enjoy admiring her other creations while scrolling to the bottom of the post for this piece.)
Artwork: Song of Spike
By
comlodge
Another prolific artist with a gorgeous portfolio of artwork, Janice has done beautiful character studies of many Buffyverse characters. I particularly like this collage, which features Spike and his shiny leather coat in the foreground, and moments from his years both as a human and as a vampire like memories floating in the background. Lines from the poem "I Made My Song A Coat" by Yeats are also weaved into the image. The history of his trophy coat makes this not just a pretty image, but interesting commentary as well. (If anyone needed inspiration for a meta post, you're welcome.) ;)
Video: Giles Is So Worried
By
double_dutchess
Ending this list on a humourous note — Giles being so serious, set to Terry Jones's over-the-top vocal in the Monty Python song, "I'm So Worried" is absolute perfection! I felt so sorry for Giles watching this montage, but I couldn't stop chuckling (which quickly turned into full-on laugh out loud). And it was so good I had to watch it again! Try to keep a straight face while watching it. I bet you all the luggage in Heathrow that you won't be able to. :)

Again, I appreciate the recognition, and more importantly, the opportunity to shine a light on the artists in our fandom!
