I remember gasping in surprise when that happened, especially since that whole scene at the end was a bit unexpected after the seeming ending with Buffy and Dawn.

Oh yes! Buffy had been must-see since FFL, but *that* moment was when I became a fangirl! (Not that I knew the term back then...)

I love the way each of the 4 main vampires were turned, they seemed to fit so well their personalities and their situation in un-life (although Drusilla's turning always makes me feel so incredibly sorry for her). But William's turning is so him - quiet, reserved, kinda poetic and somehow overblown and romantic at the same time.

OK, I'll try. That mainly comes from my own ponderings, although I'd recommend reading [livejournal.com profile] bookishwench's Darla essay (http://www.livejournal.com/users/bookishwench/99275.html) and [livejournal.com profile] peasant_'s essay on The Master (http://www.livejournal.com/users/peasant_/48630.html). You might also enjoy her essay on Drusilla (http://www.livejournal.com/users/peasant_/79350.html) too.
It always struck me that the four main vampires in the way that they were turned seemed to reflect their later characteristics.
I wrote something here (http://www.livejournal.com/users/lillianmorgan/21407.html) about the nature of the soul in most especially Spike, but this was the bit about the turning:
Ok let's take another point of view - how did each of them die, what was their motivation in becoming a vampire.
Darla - was on the point of death and wished to escape the inevitability of this mortal coil
Liam - was seeking adventure, excitement, worlds he'd never seen
Drusilla - if anything we can only pity Dru, but her death is also an escape of sorts
William - he seeks something light, effulgent, transcendental
In effect, the souled vampires do get what they want. Liam becomes the star of the show - he's the hero with the romantic love of a brave heroine, trusted friends, scrapes and japes and fights, he is the quintessential hero of an adventure story. But he must suffer (just like other heroes, Hercules etc) - just as Connor is Liam's greatest reward, Drusilla is his greatest sin.
William becomes transcendental light by saving the world at the end of Chosen.
There seems to be an element of free will in the turning of Liam and William too, that doesn't exist for Darla or Drusilla.
Hope that helps? Or is of interest?
