5 Rare-Pair Fics

Yay, rare pairs. The watchwords here seem to be "sweet and functional," which is generally my favorite kind of ship, even/especially when functionality doesn't seem too likely for the pairing involved.

1. The Five Worst Things About Dating Andrew Wells (part 1 and part 2), by deird1
post-series - Dawn/Andrew
Technically a WIP, I suppose, these are the first two parts of Dawn's cautious quest to win for herself one Andrew Wells, and they're pretty much adorable. I just don't ship Andrew generally, but Deird totally sells me on this scenario.

2. Wide and Starry Sky, by brutti_ma_buoni
Rulesverse - Wes/Illyria
A sort of companion piece to Winds Blowing Chill (which I recced here), this is the fic that made me ship Wes/Illyria. I can't think of many ships with higher angst potential, but in Brutti's hands these two make baby steps towards being good for each other.

3. The Rules, by rahirah
Barbverse - Dawn/Gunn
Dawn and Gunn discuss the formalized rules of dating and are sweet and funny and adorable about it.

4. All Wrapped Up, by beer_good_foamy
Wishverse - Xander/Willow
Xander brings Willow a present. This is just a drabble, but it stills hits that note of "sweet in the creepiest, most evil way possible."

5. Gentlemanly Pursuits, by brutti_ma_buoni
sometime during Ats - Cordy/Wes
After the one really unfortunate library kiss, these two never so much as approached shippiness in canon, but this brief ficlet suggests that was a shame. A lovely bit of morning-after.

I think I maybe saw the potential before, but yours is the first fic I saw that really made it work. Most people just go for the angst factor, and you made something more out of it.

Then again, "sweet and functional" seems to be your take on shipping, too. :)

*g* Tagging is fun, really. It's fascinating to see what gets recced in an overview sort of way. And yes, after our sessions are done it can be used year round to find either new stuff or old favorites.

Probably because brutti_ma_buoni wrote fic like a mad thing last year. She says she wrote over 70 pieces not even counting the 25 schmoop ficlets.
