Epics I Loved
Firstly, thanks to all the people posting to this community. I've learned of both new work and remembered work I've previously enjoyed. In the spirit of sharing, here are my recs!
These are a few of the multi-part stories (those with at least 20 chapters) which, every time I saw a new chapter I knew I was in for a literary treat. They were either all written or all updated during 2005. All of the authors have created very detailed universes which have sucked me in. They jump all over the place, some spander, some plot driven fics, some spuffy. Yup I just love my BuffyVerse in most flavours. It's been an amazing year fic-wise. Enjoy! In no particular order: On to the
Title:No More Snakes and Ladders
Authors:
reremouse and
tabaqui
Rating: varies but does hit NC-17
Warnings: Slash with sexual content and nudity AND plot and characterization
Why I chose this:This is a post Not Fade Away Spander with three dimensional OCs and, in the latter half, a new breed of demons guaranteed to make you smile. It starts as Hurt Comfort but grows to be so much more AND brings in both the Angel gang and the Scoobies.
reremouse and
tabaqui teased us with daily updates then began posted on a two week interval. They saved a few Mondays for me, since I knew this would be waiting for me to read.
Title: Water Hold Me Down
Author:
liz_marcs
Rating: Teen
Warnings: In later parts there is some warnings for violence, but it's all in service to the story.
Why I Chose This: This epic by
liz_marcs explores the concept of revenge and alternative universes and what happens when you don't have all the information. Set Post Chosen it features Xander/Anya (note those alternative universes) and is an ensemble piece with focus on Xander, Faith, and Giles. For those who haven't had the opportunity to read any of Liz's work, she is a very nuanced writer who deftly leads you through twisty plots and investigation of the relationship of her characters. This one is both character and plot driven. AND she's still writing so there will be more! All of her work is outstanding, but the majority of this story was posted in 2005 which is why I chose it.
Title:A Love As Strong As Death
Author:
enigmaticblues
Rating: Despite dealing with dark themes, this story is a Teen rating
Why I chose this: This story follows her Cast Me Not Away, found on her website. I'd recommend reading that first because it introduces the friendship dynamic between Wesley and Spike. It's a very different take on Angel Season Four and Spike post Dead Things. However Cast Me Not Away was not written in 2005. Its sequel was. You remember what the Mayor told Angel and Buffy about an immortal loving a mortal? You think that wouldn't affect Spike and Buffy? She explores this theme amongst many other with amazing OCs and how an old Slayer would deal with a new one.
Title: Beautifully Broken
Author:
lit_gal
Rating: NC-17
Warnings: Dom/Sub, Torture, Slavery, a very dark fic S/X
Why I chose this: This is another Spander, Hurt Comfort but focusing on the psychological damage that being captured by demons and turned into a slave would do to Xander. It is a dark fic, but with flickers of hope. The characterization of all the characters, including Joyce, explores reactions to loss. Xander must try to build a new self. Spike is hoping to help him. The writing is at turns heartbreaking and giggle inducing. (though for something a little lighter of hers check out Musical Wars (What if Xander wasn't in Sunnydale when Buffy arrived?}
Title: Keeper of the Book
Author:
nwhepcat
Rating: Teen
Why I chose this: This story was written in short bites which were posted almost daily. Set after Wesley shots his "father" in AtS Season Five. It brings back a reoccurring character in Anne and explores what happens when you send a Demon Magnet to a land with old gods. Amazing Wesley voice and a sense of the interplay between outsiders. Plot and friendship driven fic. Oh why this one of her works? Because it was my introduction to her writing. Again, everything she writes (often with a Xander/Faith approach) is worth reading!
