There were a lot of great B/A fics this year. It was extremely hard to narrow it down but I chose stories that hit all my buttons of what B/A means to me. My B/A may not be your B/A but I'd like to think that all of these fics can be enjoyed by any fan of the B/A pairing.
1. The Last Beat of My Heart by
thenxyie. Whatever summary I would give this fic would be so inadequate; instead, I'll let hers speak for me: Tucked into the inside of his jacket, close to his heart and secreted away from the world, there is a pocket watch that ticks off the minutes \of his mortal life. He can hear that ticking, every moment of every day, each tiny click another second gone by without her in his life. Once, it had served to remind him of a day that existed only in his memory and dreams. Now, it reminds him that he could have that day again, every single day for the rest of his life, if only he were brave enough. Now, it tells him that time is running out.
2. Possession-Exorcism by
stoptocheer. I can't even begin to do this fic justice. A truly breath-taking piece that will stay with you long after finishing it.
3. Return to Me by
carlyinrome. A post-NFA story that has action, drama, smut, love... and
carlyinrome has such beautiful imagery throughout the entire story, you'd honestly think you're right there in the desert with Angel and Buffy.
4. A Thousand Tiny Deaths by
thenxyie. Again, her summary will have to speak for me. Tiny candle lights from their tabletop are caught in her eyes, illluminating them like doorways, and for a moment, he can see all the way inside her quiet fortress. He wants to go inside, kneel down before her altar and give himself to her completely. But his chest remains still, and her face remains unmoved, and all there is are waiters that glide by with high-perched trays and busboys that dip low, and the clock on the wall ticks off another second, oblivious and merciless.
5. Weight of Life
marenfic. Quite possibly my favorite fic written this year, of any pairing or character. A heart-breakingly realistic look at a post-NFA B/A relationship that doesn't romanticize their past in order to have a future. It's messy, it hurts, but it's real. It's a must-read for any B/A fan.
