1.Overheated by [livejournal.com profile] teand - All – I do love the snarkily confident Cordelia Chase, and her meeting in this ficlet with Dean Winchester from SPN was perfect..

I think (and someday this may actually turn into an essay) that some of the most interesting fanfic can be metafiction, self-reflexively commenting on it's own genre while at the same time telling compelling, fun, beautiful stories.  Not heavy handed, not weird, just lovely. So, here are 5 fics that illustrated some aspect of metafiction for me this year....

1. Minutes of the Watchers' Council, Cleveland Branch (Selected Highlights) (Gunn/Xander, FRT)
by [livejournal.com profile] mireille719
Summary: Report from holiday committee: There will be absolutely no mistletoe included in the holiday decorations. Anyone found hanging mistletoe in an attempt to embarrass the Watchers will be summarily executed reprimanded.
How does it fit? Mir plays with style here, turning meeting minutes into something kind of adorable, definitely hugely funny, and establishes narrative without traditional narrative techniques.

this way for the rest. )

Not for Top 5, but for our originating Whedonverse, BtVS. It's great to see all the new offerings being shared here in our latest session. Also thanks to [livejournal.com profile] katekat1010 for the great new layout we're sporting! Send her some love!

If you'd like to see [livejournal.com profile] buffyversetop5 make it to 10 years too, keep making those rec lists. Keep us in mind as you find things you enjoy throughout the year. An easy way to keep track of things is to click posts into Memories with a Top 5 tag so that they can be more easily put together into lists at year-end. Also, recs you make throughout the year can be recycled here when we open again.

We’ll be reopening for our Classic Recs Weekend on October 29, 2008, so if you missed posting anything this session, you've got a spot reserved for it then!

There are so many talented authors in the buffy verse - and here's a writing pair that turns out fantastic works, whether they're writing the fic together or seperately.  Here's an assortment of the fantastic things they gave us to read this year....

1.  Everything Xander Knows About Time Travel (He Learned From Back To The Future)
(Giles/Xander, FRAO) by [livejournal.com profile] soft_princess and [livejournal.com profile] mireille719
Summary:  Xander has to go back in time, to the 1970s, to retrieve an artifact that will save the world.  Guess who he finds there?
Why should you read this?  It's a great back in time story, and of course there's some interesting encounters between Xander and the guy who calls himself Ripper!

getting 5 more recs in before the final bell! )

In the past year, I've been reading a goodly amount of Mal/River fic. It's a small niche in the fandom, that's for sure. These are five of my favorites from five of my favorite Mal/River authors.

[livejournal.com profile] hereswith is my favorite Mal/River writer (if I didn't make the five different writers rule, Hereswith would have gotten a majority of the spots) and Never Go Back is my favorite story. If you are willing to try only one Mal/River story, make it this one.

Quotes and four more stories )
