I think in the past two years I have taken part in just about every single seasonal community there is. This is a very personal list in sense of overall enjoyment with a community. Communities where there is cross-pollination and exposure and exchange between members who freely comment on one another's work, mods who try to comment on most or all of the work in their communities--these are the things that can make a community have a special feel for me. In 2007, I'm cutting back on the time I have to give to seasonal communities, but all of these would make my list for those reasons. In short, some communities really party.

There were lots of great Meta posts in 2006. This is a selection I particularly enjoyed. This being me, they do have a strong Spike-centric bias.

School Hard Re-examined, by [livejournal.com profile] peasant_. In this essay, the author makes what is to me a very convincing argument confounding the widely held fanon belief that Spike was bad at planning.

1. Strange Rebirth by [livejournal.com profile] escritoireazul - 14+ - Turns out Cordelia is not quite so dead after all and she might be getting a run for her money considering who’s there when she wakes up. Firefly crossover.

I figured that this might be something that people weren't familiar with and when I saw the RPG tag in the tag list, it inspired me. (I use the tag list...a lot.) Not sure how many people are familiar with RPGs (Role playing games) but the 'verse has some of the most active and longest running games, especially on Yahoo. These are PBeM (Play By E-Mail) more so than a message board, chat, or communities settings.

So I picked out five great ones that I play in that have strong characterization, great voices, fabulous plots, and just really fun people. They are great to join if you are into RPing or if you just want to lurk to see great stories unfold.

I am starting off with the big momma of them all...

I'm not certain of the date of some of these, but I discovered them all in 2006. They illustrate the essence of Spike's character that we watched develop through 7 seasons.

1. Sexy Spike: - Joss may have used smoking as a metaphor for evil but some of us viewed Spike 'lighting up' very differently.

by [livejournal.com profile] _prophecygirl I love the timing in this animation.

Joss swore many times that he'll never use time-travel in his stories until he finally caved for a while in Timebomb (AtS5x19). But ficwriters love time-travel stories. Why? Obviously, because Buffyverse characters change and time-travel fics are the best way to highlight these changes. Also - because it's fun and it tests authors' skills in plotting and character development.

WIP, AU post-GID. After the confrontation with Shadow Men Buffy gets back only to find herself in 2033 where vampires are accepted as members of human society. When she stakes a vampire, she gets arrested and is accused of the murder. Spike, who works in a Humanoids United organization, is charged with her prosecution. The author focuses on characters but manages to create a very consistent and logical picture of the world in 2033.
