So I listed my favourite non-shippy fics earlier, and here is my Top 5 2005 fics with Spike as the main character (listed in alphabetical order) that focus on the character rather than the relationship:

Warning: Without giving the story away, the fic does get rather dark toward the end.

Why I chose this: Although this is Spike & Dawn, what really makes this fic interesting is the way Spike is portrayed. So often he’s too nice. This fic reminds you of why he is a vampire.

Why I chose this: Just delicious post-NFA Spike. The narrator of the story hates to love and loves to hate him, so we see Spike at his perilous best: garrulous, foolish and an exceptional tale-teller. The twist at the end is rather nice too.

Why I chose this: Set somewhere after Africa, Spike is onboard a ship dealing with the ramifications of his soul. Intensely atmospheric and very gripping.

Why I chose this: Poor Spike loses his soul, will Angel be able to help him find it again? Hilarious and touching fic, especially dealing with how Spike has changed over the years and also looking at the Spike and Angel friendship Season 5 AtS.

Why I chose this: This story spans the life and times of William aka Spike, and some of the people who had an impact on his life. Each chapter could be wonderful on its own, but together they’re a great insight into what makes him tick.

Heee! I just love the way elisi looks at Spike (and Angel). You get the feeling after reading one of her fics, that she really knows the characters and has been thinking long and hard about them.
