Five things that influenced my own work in 2005.

1. [livejournal.com profile] toobusytowrite's prison fic S/A NC 17 Bent Justice This work is simply brilliant AU. It reads like a book. Its a classic and if you haven't read it? You should. It was hugely exciting as a newbie to see it updated and to visit her journal to read chapters. I'll never forget Angel and Spike up against the wall of his cell scenes. Some of the hottest spangel I've ever read. They are both very domy, so they wrestle out how to work the sexual/relationship dynamic. Yum. I don't think its really influenced me hugely, in a writing sense, but its just one of those things that I think of as the 'best of.'

2. [livejournal.com profile] theohara's spawn Rated PG 13 Two Summers If the best writers from Buffy were writing fanfic, they'd read just like her. She's the closest to capturing that dynamic I've ever seen. Unfortunately this is a WIP and might never be finished, but its some of the best reading for any reader out there. Go read this jewel. It made me write spawn because I couldn't find anything else out there after reading hers. Spike claiming Dawn? The hot.

*I'll note here that I can't track down two pieces of art that influenced me by [livejournal.com profile] sueworld2003. Her body of work is so huge that its pretty tough. One is the tentacle art she did for [livejournal.com profile] bogwitch for her spillyria piece "Succour," and the other is a Punk Spike piece against the wall of an alley with a dead body taken from a comic book. Those were both earlier works of hers that really stuck with me. If I can find URLs, I'll link to them in future for those of you who might never have seen them. The artwork influenced my thinking a bit when I was writing PET, my finished spillyria. I never read Boggy's piece at the time, but I think Sue is why I had some tentacle slash scenes in that story.

3. The art of [livejournal.com profile] velvet_virago for [livejournal.com profile] lit_gal's Beautiful Broken. I'm sure I saw bits and pieces of it, since I had two friends who used to hang at the com where they put up their work, but this piece SO NOT WORK/KID SAFE of m/m sex stands out: here Its beautiful. I'm not sure if I ever wrote spander because I liked what I was seeing of her work or the writers of that time, or if it was just because I had a friend I wanted to gift some to, so I'm not sure if this is a true influence, but it was part of the 'scene' when I first started writing KEPT.

4. Weirdly, I've met people who came on lj after I did, (since I still feel very new) whom I knew in the early days of their sharing and now they influence me. By that I mean, I'm really blown away by what they do. One of them is [livejournal.com profile] spankspike. If you are not reading this primarily S/A writer, you are missing something. She gets heart as well as being one of the most sensually-detailed writers I've ever read. She gifted me with two drabbles of spiley that I think are some of the most mindblowing reading I've had this year: NC 17 Riley/Spike here and NC 17 Spike/Riley here

5. [livejournal.com profile] denied_heaven came on around the same time as Spanky. Where do I even start? A really good narrative story teller is rare. It really is hard to tell a story that is an arc, filled with characters and logical growth and all the things we enjoyed in the shows. She does it so well. Here is the first work of hers I remember reading: Speed Demon NC 17, S/X and of course, I'm so into her Spike/Angel/Xander NC 17 Thrice Damned and her new Xangel NC 17 here called Stricken. That one just started and the dominance shake down between Angel and Xander in a recent chapter was the hotness.
