Five Fics I Enjoyed in 2013
Jan. 18th, 2014 09:02 pmI couldn't come up with any unifying theme other than "I liked these."
Moon Gods by pug. Oz/Willow, Rated Teen.
This is a gorgeous description of a few moments for Oz and Willow on a full moon night in Season Four. Pug has a really different take on Oz/Willow than I’ve seen before, using evocative language and imagery to create something stark and poetic and beautiful.
Tea Parties by
snickfic. Drusilla/Buffybot. Rated Teen.
This takes a crackfic pairing and makes it work in a delightfully twisted way. The Drusilla voice is excellent.
The Restful Sleep of Those About to Save the World by littlerobbergirl. Kendra, Buffy. Rated General Audiences.
Kendra sleeps over at Buffy’s, the night before they have to stop Angelus and Acathla. There isn’t much fiction written about Kendra and her prickly relationship with Buffy, and I really liked getting an opportunity to see Buffy through Kendra’s eyes.
Only Human by websandwhiskers. Tara, Rated Teen.
Sometime between The Gift and Bargaining, Tara contemplates the resurrection spell and her reasons for going along with it, in a way that feels completely plausible.
What Women Do by
tiny_white_hats Dawn, Rated PG
Dawn reflects on what she’s learned about being a woman by watching Buffy, Willow and Cordelia grow up. It’s a splendid tribute to the strength of all four of them.

Date: 2014-01-20 05:11 am (UTC)I'm so glad you liked that aspect of the list! One of the things I love about the Buffyverse is that there are so many strong female characters who have complex relationships with each other. I really enjoy fiction that reflects that.

Date: 2014-01-20 06:33 am (UTC)I've made it a priority to focus on the ladies in my journal. I was really pleased at the response to my Ted meta (http://red-satin-doll.livejournal.com/13017.html)focusing on Buffy and Joyce, and my first Buffy & Tara friendship meta (http://red-satin-doll.livejournal.com/17902.html) that basically turned into my "love letter" to the women of the 'verse. (& Yes that IS shameless self-pimpage.*lol* Those two essays are two of my favorite things I've ever written.)
I really enjoy fiction that reflects that.
Absolutely. It's one of main the things I look for and can be astonishingly hard to find (IMO) so when I do come across it, it's a real joy.
