Season 8 was a wild ride that made mostly everybody at least a little bit queasy, though it ended with a much appreciated whimper. Season 9 started off fairly evenly, though there's probably a bumpy road ahead. Grab your barf bags!
Here are five post-Season 8 #40 fics (and a bonus!) from three of my favorite fic writers that are filling in the blanks, bending canon to their will, and even throwing canon out the proverbial window. And you don't necessarily need to acknowledge the existence of the comics to enjoy them.

Welcome to the brain of Buffy Summers. Watch your step: things can get a bit hard to navigate, between the whitewater rapids of the River Denial and the deep canyons of Attempts at Introspection (and watch out for the quicksand of random fantasies that tend to pop out of nowhere—they’ll suck you in!). And your tour guide most likely won’t be of any help: most of the time, she’s not even sure what’s going on in here.

A year after the events of Season Eight, Buffy is still reeling. But even as she tries to move on and sort out the hurt and confusion that she's been battling all year, a new enemy lurks...
3. Long Time Coming Part I and Part II by
gryfndor_godess
This fic is a continuation of “Freefall, Part 2,” issue #2 of S9. Literally. Buffy’s first line of dialogue is from the issue, which was written by Andrew Chambliss. For those not keeping up with the comics but interested in reading anyway, the issue ends with Buffy encountering a mysterious boy who can somehow turn vampires into dead humans with his touch. Buffy is on the run from the police, who suspect her of being responsible for all the corpses that keep popping up.

Missing scene, S9 #1. Spike puts Buffy to bed and muses on his inability to let her go. I write too much Spuffy. There was this Wishverse BA thing I was going to do, but then the comic came out and I got too distracted. Oh well. :/

At the end of Severin's arc (i.e., this is not directly post 9.3 but takes place sometime later in the season), Buffy ponders her track record with men and takes matters into her own hands.
Bonus:
In Which Buffy Totally Does Not Wait For Spike For Sixty-Two Days by

Season Nine fic, all the information right there in the header. Buffy doesn't wait for Spike. Nope. She practically doesn't even remember that he exists. *nods*
