Five Fantastic Willow Fics

velvetwhip.livejournal.comNo surprise, I suppose, that Willow fics are the subject of my list, but it's still worth doing. These are five fics which I feel represent some of the best stories written about Willow Rosenberg - or any character - in 2013.

lilbreck: First of all, the writing is gorgeous - exquisitely opaque and delicate. Second, the story is dark at times, but in a quiet, insidiously creepy way that gets under your skin like a cold chill. Third... well, read it for yourself and you'll see everything I love about it and that you'll love too.

red-satin-doll.livejournal.comAll of these are Buffy-centric and/or "gen" vids that remind me why I love the Buffyverse, and Buffy Summers, so much. The same superlatives applies to each of them: presenting ideas, themes or arcs in the verse in new or unusual ways; excellent editing to the beat, rhythms, mood and lyrics (as applicable) of the music; matching visual movements from one shot to the next. Listed in alphabetical order by the vidder's screenames.
"Buffy the Vampire Slayer Tribute Trailer" by Afterthebattle - Finished in time for International Women's Day 2013. I've seen a lot of so-called "epic btvs vids" but this one truly is epic; set to a remix of Ennio Morricone's "The Ecstasy of Gold".
"Once" by Afterthebattle - Unusual in it's focus on Buffy's relationship with Dawn, who gets more "screen time" here than any character save Buffy.
"Die Young" bykaydeefalls - another meta vid about violence in SDHS, Seasons 1-3 that is both funny and dark.
"Buffy Summers, A Tribute" by MrMorda898 - Somewhat similar in feel and quality to Afterthebattle's tribute trailer but more Buffy-centric.
"It's Not My Time" by MrMorda898 - Another gen tribute trailer from MrMorda but the upbeat title song by 3DoorsDown gives it a very different feel from the other vids on this list.
(One caveat: I'd love to see all vidders remember to include the song credits (title and artist) as the music used is very often new to me.)

endeniVengeance is Mine by hufflepuffsneak (PG, gen, crossover with Marvel's Avengers, mentions of child abuse) - “Hey, I’m Natalie.” Natasha gave a name close to the truth, the child deserved that, but she hadn’t been a successful vengeance demon for the past six decades by handing out her true name to just anyone. (EDIT: Yay, the link is now working properly!)

Tightrope by fray-adjacent12 - Boy, the movement and the rhythm of this vid! So amazing!
Born To Kill by thedothatgirl - Such an intense Faith vid! Love the B&W style and the explosive ending!
Final Hour (10th CHOSEN anniversary) by narvinek - OMG, I keep rewatching this new version and I keep comparing it to the old one and, yes, they're pretty different, the focus here is more tightly on Buffy but I really can't choose which one I like best... *_*

Top Five Fantastic Remixes

You take someone else's story (with their permission, of course) and write it differently. Disney films are an oddly great example of the remix concept, but personally, I think these authors do it better. These are five stories that mixed up this year and of course, each one has a link to the original that inspired it. (I'm not going to lie...there's a lot of femslash here.)
1) Same Strokes, Different Folks bybrutti_ma_buoni - This Willow/Sandy tale is a remix of one of my stories, actually. BMB takes the original tale and turns it on it's timeline. She captures both characters extremely well and I promise she delivers a sting that will make your heart hurt a little for both ladies.
