Zoë's strong, loyal, cunning, and one of the most kickass characters ever. And here are five stories from 2007 that reminded me why I love her so much:

1) We Walk a Thousand Stairs by [livejournal.com profile] ana_grrl, PG, gen. Ana paints outstandinly vivid snapshots of Zoë throughout the war with the Alliance and into her time on Serenity. It's a gorgeous exploration of character that completely captures the essence of all that is Zoë.

2) Vigil by [livejournal.com profile] valeriebean, PG, gen. This short, poignant story is set right after the Big Damn Movie; it deals with Zoë's overwhelming grief and the beginning of its healing. This story also does a lovely job depicting the close bond and deep trust she has with Mal.

3) A Thinner Band of Sky by [livejournal.com profile] prehistoric_sea, PG-13, gen. This post-Serenity story switches back and forth between Inara and Zoë, deftly using that contrast to illuminate both characters. It's more than a little heartbreaking in the best way.

4) Five Stages of Grief That Zoë Washburne Never/Probably/Definitely Went Through (Or, an Elegy for a Pilot) by [livejournal.com profile] biggrstaffbunch, NC-17, Wash/Zoë. This bittersweet and strangely hopeful story is set after the Big Damn Movie. Even though it's all about grief, it's also a powerful statement all about the enduring strength of love.

5) Chien: gradual progress, growth by [livejournal.com profile] zooey_glass04, G, gen. This post-Serenity story is a short tale of Zoë's pregnancy that manages to fit in a lot of profound, subtle observations about family and healing.
