Where's the B/A love? *g* I must rectify it immediately! My OTP to end all OTPS, here is a list of my five favorite B/A stories written in 2006.
1. Gods and Monsters by
carlyinrome. Written for the 2006 IWRY marathon,
carlyinrome once again wrote a story so undeniably B/A, so true to their relationship and to each character. Their struggles as a couple recently reunited, both facing the complex issues before them as they deal with Angel's humanity and how their fondest dreams aren't always as they appear, are superbly written, resonating with the reader long after the story ends. A *definite* must read for any fan of the B/A relationship.
2. The Day of Wine and Roses by
thenyxie. I always fall more in love with B/A whenever I read one of the
thenyxie's stories and this one is no exception. One of the most beautifully written stories I've ever read, this piece written for the Happy Endings ficathon explores a strong Buffy, a happy, confident Buffy who has what she has always wanted. Learning to live the normal life, she embraces her future and chooses the happiness that comes with loving Angel, no longer the only reason she is happy but an important one.
thenyxie continues to blow me away with her imagery time and time again.
3. If Ever--An Epic in 500 Words by
kita0610. Only 500 words, this piece doesn't waste a single word. Using five 100-word drabbles set during various episodes, Kita captures the harsh realities and the bittersweet pleasurepain that defines the pairing. Epic, indeed.
4. Intermezzo by
marenfic. Another entry for the 2006 IWRY marathon, this story, by my favorite B/A author *ever*, is a wonderful look at a future B/A relationship--one where the sturm und drang of their past slides into the easy-going, remarkably normal relationship of lovers turned friends turned lovers once again. The B/A pairing can often be seen as over-the-top, the big moments overshadowing the tender, smaller ones, and Maren uses this story as a way to explore those smaller moments, the "intermezzos" in life. Fantastic look at my OTP to end all OTPs.
5. History Erased and Rewritten by
neverneverfic. The off-screen meeting of Buffy and Angel during S6 of BtVS has provided fertile ground for B/A writers, but never has a story evoked such raw pain and heartbreak as this one. The exploration of a darker reunion, one fraught with the tragic nature of B/A, is so believably real, the reader can't imagine the off-screen meeting occuring any other way. The story stays with the audience long after the end.
