Five classic fics that make me shiver

I love [livejournal.com profile] buffyversetop5 classic recs. It's a great time to rootle around in the vault and rediscover fics that got me hooked on fandom way, way back in the day. As we're coming up to Halloween, here are five fics that make me shiver.

Three Ring by [livejournal.com profile] brutti_ma_buoni finds Xander and Willow on a school trip to a less than normal circus. There aren’t any clowns in this fic, but if there were, I’m damn sure they’d be scary. This story always makes me want to go back and read Something Wicked This Way Comes. This is Gen.

Five of my faves from Twisting The Hellmouth

Ten Things That Never Happened in the BtVS Fandom by Booster
Summary: Some spells are stronger and further reaching than you’d think. What if Dawn had been around for a lot longer than you remember....?
My reason for the rec: A lovely bit of metafiction (in a way) in which Dawn's origin is even stranger than we thought.

Just One Night by Vogonguard
Summary: A careless use of the W-word and the Scoobies from Chosen meet the Scoobies from Prophecy Girl.
My reason for the rec: Not exactly a do-over, but a nice story about time travel and the evolution of most of the BtVS characters

The Multiverse by Hotpoint
Summary: Serenity falls through a rip in the continuum and Mal meets a very familiar face on the other side
My reason for the rec: This one's just fun, a head-on crash between the Serenity crew and the Buffyverse.

Dawn's Fine by Abra
Summary: Dawn Summers goes to college in Metropolis. When she notices that her History professor, Milton Fine, looks just like Spike, she can't stay away. Prof. Fine has his own agenda to go along with her crush.
My reason for the rec: It's one of the better Buffy / Smallville crossovers, and plays fair with both fandoms.

Dojo Hard by Speakertocustomers
Summary: The Buffyverse characters dwell in 17th century Japan. Gilbert and Sullivan meets Samurai movies meets - Paddington Bear? Parody, bad haiku, and martial arts in something loosely resembling BtVS S2. Very loosely.
My reason for the rec: It's immense fun and VERY silly.

Top 5 Everyone In the Kitchen Sink

So here's a bit of many characters, fandoms, and working on the formats ;)

1) Five Vampires Dr. Horrible Never Met by snowpuppies. Dr. Horrible has a plan to become more evil. Unfortunately, he needs the help of a vampire.

2) Foreign Spices May Disagree With You by AnonEhouse. Saffron's good at conning but some people have been running a way longer game.

3) Nine Rules for Living in a Broken World by Wisdom Eagle. Various crossovers set in the Dark Angel universe, though my favorite of these is II. Dance with your head held high with Original Cindy and Gunn.

4) I Hate You by double_dutchess. Sometimes it isn't a thin line, it's just hate between vampires.

5) The Director Will See You Now by toucanpie. What if SHIELD were responsible for more than just chasing down and sorting out the unexplainable? What if the fate of the world rested in their hands? (The Cabin in the Woods fusion).

5 adorkable Andrews in Spuffy fic

The Carnivorous Carnival by [livejournal.com profile] bewilde
It's a few chapters in, but he's there. At least in every version of the story that I've read so far.
"This, Me of the Past, is what we in the Future call Pokémon Go. (..) With this Smart Phone, which I have through a clever mixture of magic and technology enabled to speak to servers in the Future, you can catch all of the Pokémon long before anyone else on Earth even has access to the game. You, my younger self, shall be the world’s first True Pokémon Master.”

5 +1 Great Images from 2016

One of my images was originally created toward the end of 2015 but has been reworked in 2016. Since I wasn't sure if that should count, I made it my extra.

  1. Restfield's Not Thinking About Buffy - OK, I'm not good with images so I don't know what to say but it's in how he's looking away from her, how she's in the smoke. I adore it.

the rest of the links are getting me a copy of Drawing for Dummies so maybe I could sketch something cool for next year's rec list )

Five Ficlets That Made Me Giggle in 2016

God knows we needed to get our laughs where we could last year, so here are five ficlets from 2016 that made me giggle

To kick off, try a perfect Giles, Spike drabble from [livejournal.com profile] il_mio_capitano. Spike might just be a little bit obsessed with Buffy. No wonder Giles needs Something Stronger.

Right this way for the funnies… )

Top 5 Stories for Death!

1. The Very Secret Diary of Andrew Wells by deird1 - Andrew’s journal, not exactly what you’d expect

2. hearing, seeing by [livejournal.com profile] kwritten - Dawn and Spike, grieving for Buffy, take a road trip without telling anyone

3. The Twelfth Sister by rowan (littlerhymes) - just so you know, very dark, but I'm pretty sure you alreay know that.

4. All Set Down - Oh Goddess, yes!

5. devo79’s Blackout - I always cry at the end

Top 5 fanvids focused more on the group than on a single person

1. Samantha Winning’s Asylum - Buffy, Faith, and Cordelia are in a mental institution and something’s really wrong in a horror movie kind of a way. I’m very, very disappointed this isn’t a real movie even though it’d be too scary for me to watch with the sound on.
the recs are wondering if they could live in a Barbie world )

Five unexpected but fantastic works of fanfic

Hello, gentle readers of this lovely fandom. First-time poster here, because...I have recs! Now the challenge is to group them by five and somehow come up with creative categories for them. :)

1. Answering Prayers (Joyce/Angel, R) by [livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip. Buffyverse is deep and wide, but have you ever expected to find stories shipping Joyce/Angel? I confess I hadn't. The character of Joyce, who is not as fleshed out in canon as I'd have liked, absolutely comes alive with Velvetwhip's well-paced and restrained story-telling. It's an interesting POV that will have you question your previous opinions of Buffy, who is, in comparison, just a child. This nuanced, angsty story is full of both sense and sensibility, simultaneously clever and plausible, such that it's made a convert out of me! Rejoice for Joyce!

But wait, there are FOUR more... )

Favorite crossover stories of 2015

Some favorite crossover stories of the past year, arranged form shortest to longest.

All In A Day's Work by [livejournal.com profile] beer_good_foamy (Buffy-centric, crossover with the song "Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots", PG-13).
To be fair, Buffy wasn't entirely sure how she was supposed to stop a giant robot about to attack Tokyo. But still, being told that someone else would handle it felt a bit weird.
Yes, it's crossover with a song. Yes, it works. Go read it!

Five MORE Wonderful Willow Fics

You didn't think I could stop at 5, did you?

Here are 5 more amazingly fab stories starring Willow.

1) Home is Where Your Heart Is (Willow, Xander, Sheila, Ira) by [livejournal.com profile] sandy_s: Another Spuffy legend tries her hand at Willow and once again does it exceedingly well. [livejournal.com profile] sandy_s gives us Willow's last visit with her parents but she also gives us a lovely evocation of the enduring friendship of Willow and Xander. A twofer that's twice as nice for that. This one has a core of sadness and resignation that really resonates. Oh, this one was written for [livejournal.com profile] whichwillow, as are the next two (and The Killer in Me, from my earlier list). That fest really inspires wonderful stories.

Five silly fics

I can't top the Narwhal!verse (how did I not now about this?) but here are five fics that made the crackfic fan in me grin like a loon this year.

Based on a True Story by Oxnate. Mayor Richard Wilkins III isn't afraid of anything... but his shadow. Of all the werecreatures in the world, here's a hole I haven't seen anyone poke their head out of before.

Five More "Do-Over" Fics

Since people seemed quite taken with the first set here are five more, probably better known than the first set.

Living History by LizMarcs
Rating: PG, Worksafe
Some people have come from a place far, far away and a time far, far ahead to ask for help on an urgent matter. The time they were aiming for? February 2008. The place? Moscow. The problem? Somehow they've ended up in Cleveland, September 2003. And that’s just the beginning of the trouble; they seem to be descendants of the Scoobies and are determined not to change the past... but they haven't reckoned with Xander. Superbly written with a fascinating plot, some of the most beautifully crafted OCs I've ever seen and a wonderful portrayal of Xander and Faith. Very highly recommended!

5 Firefly Crossovers

1) Ex Turpi Causa by drsquidlove. A lawyer offers to bring Simon and River their freedom. Simon thinks they'd be better off taking their chances on Serenity. Angel crossover. Read more... )

Five "Do Over" Fics

The HP 'verse is the commonest one for fics where the author re-writes history by inserting a character (internal or external) who knows what's supposed to happen and is determined to change things but the Buffy 'verse has its examples too...

1. Martian Manhunter by Mediancat
Rating: PG, Worksafe
As the result of a bet that we spend most of the story waiting to find out the nature of, Veronica Mars is in the Buffyverse, knowing what's coming and unable to do anything about it... or can she? If you're familiar with mediancat's work then you're probably already anticipating wonderful writing. If you're a fan of the Veronica Mars series then look no further: this is for you! :-)
