5 great 2023 vids from SlayerVid

In the last year I’ve been really happy to watch a new name in BTVS vidding make a mark (their other non Buffy ‘verse vids are excellent too and worth checking out!) I highlighted one in my classic vids list, but here are five examples of SlayerVid’s excellent work from this year.

This one is hot off the press and definitely appropriate for the time of year. This is Thriller.

Top 5 2022 Fanworks

Giles Word Search by il_mio_capitano. It's so rare to see fannish games and this was a treat!

Vid: Spuffy Abridged by double_duchess. "Inspired by the classic Buffy the Vampire Slayer Abridged vid by Rowena." Fun ride through their arc and a nice homage to a classic vid.

Classic Buffy 'verse Ensemble vids

Yay for another season of [community profile] buffyversetop5. I always look forward to it so thank you in advance to the mods for being keepers of the flame.

I found I had so many ensemble vids in my list of links that I thought I’d make a specific post about them. So here are five classic Buffy ‘verse ensemble vids that I really love from days gone by.

I Lived by Buffyverseedits is a great walk down memory lane. It’s really happy making

Five great Buffy 'verse vids from 2022

Here’s my final list for this year’s buffyversetop5. Five awesome vids created this year.

Spuffy Abridged by Double Dutchess. Done for this year’s Seasonal Spuffy with The William Tell Overture as the soundtrack, the editing in this is awesome. Also worth checking out is the vid it was inspired by - Buffy the Vampire Slayer Abridged by Rowena - the link is in the DD’s description.

Fanworks that are (mostly) new to me

Apologies. It's technically the 29th here as it's shortly after midnight, but I'm not focused on 2022 works with these fanworks. I just didn't realize how late it had gotten.

Buffy Summers by Veruca - something about Buffy's expression in this image just gets me
The rest of the works are picking out their costumes for next Monday )

My Five

Here are my five.

First, there's the Spuffy video I turn to whenever I'm trying to get the words flowing but having issues...

Then we have my personal favorite of all BtVS photomanips I've ever seen shared at this year's Summer of Giles: Family Portrait"> with Rupert Giles and Buffy and Joyce Summers.

An older fic, but one that was new to me and not only took me by surprise but made me interested in a pairing I'd never thought previously I could get behind (Spike/Willow) -
Heights.

My favorite Angel story of all time, starring Lorne and a special friend - Psychic Friend.

And I'll leave y'all with another favorite video to help get those Spuffy Muses flowing! There are some really beautiful shots of James/Spike here.

Five Classic vids

Yay for the return of [community profile] buffyversetop5

Here are five classic Buffy 'verse vids that I love. Assume that there are spoilers for both BTVS and AtS in these vids.

Life is Beautiful by starryeyesxx1. Possibly my favourite BTVS/AtS ensemble vid. This is 6 minutes of awesomeness.

Top 5 Late 2020 + 2021 Works

Just a reminder to everyone that tomorrow is the final day for mixed Classic + 2021 posts. Saturday kicks off our 2021 Flash Forward weekend until we close at midnight UTC on November 2!

Feel It Still by double-dutchess. Just when you think that Buffyverse vids have tapped everything, here's one on Spike (along with Buffy, the most overvidded character) and yet it feels fresh and energized and modern. Read more... )

Top 5 Spinoff Videos

  1. Asylum: Buffy’s never left the mental institution and it’s a horror movie / series. I would watch the shit out of this.
  2. Ripper Opening Titles: If Ripper's backstory were a spinoff. Oh yeah, loved this video for years now.
  3. Ripper Trailer: post canon; ooh, looks awesome but might be too scary for little old me.
  4. Illyria Opening Credits: I just found this video this evening. It's so good.
  5. Buffy the Vampire Slayer: School Reunion: Asks the question what would Buffy look like if it came back now? It would look freaking awesome.

Top 5 videos

  1. Brave New World by kaydefalls refers to wish!verse where Anya asks "How do you know the other world is any better than this?" and Giles responds "It has to be." This vid asks the question: Is it really better? And the answer's somewhat ambiguous.
  2. You may need to be as old as I am to get The Odd Couple (Giles/Spike). It takes the opening audio track from The Odd Couple tv series and puts it with images of Spike and Giles. Gives a great suggestion of them as opposite guy roommates.
  3. I Belong to You makes a convincing case for a love triangle between Buffy, Angel, and Mr. Gordo (who is played by piglet).
  4. You'd think that playing the robots in Buffy against the song Robot Girlfriend would make for a light-hearted video, but Robot Girlfriend is actually quite poignant at the end.
  5. Transparent: Oh my Goddess. This Willow character study is just amazing.

Top 5 Older Buffy Works That I Stumbled Upon via Marginalia Search

There's a search engine designed for discovering old-fashioned little websites, and I took it for a spin with some Buffy search terms. Here's some of what I found.

1. (maybe cross the country become a rock star) by Amy (Giles/Oz/Cordelia, PG-13) in Loaded, the Giles/Oz zone of the BtVS Writers' Guild.
This was amazing. The mood and atmosphere of this story has aged well, by which I mean it gave me something like pandemic lockdown vibes despite being pre-2007ish and not about any kind of lockdown. There is a bunch of clever lines and a quirky, semi-absurd concept at the core of the story, which somehow connects beautifully to Oz's unmoored state of mind.

A mixed bag of lovely random stuff from 2020

The Costume Codex is a lovely YT channel run by a costume designer who analyses the subtext of shows through their costuming decisions. All the videos are worth a look, but I really enjoyed this analysis from a few months back of Giles’s evolution in the Buffy ‘verse as it is reflected in his clothing choices - Our Man in Tweed; a look at Giles through costume.

4 Poems and 1 Filk from 2020

China Girl from Poetry by William Pratt - VERSUS by SPIKE by MissLuci (whole chapter rated R but poem is not sexual or otherwise graphic)
MissLuci wrote a whole multichapter story full of Spike's poems and Buffy's reactions to them!! This poem is about Spike killing Xin Rong, written from the perspective of pre-series soulless Spike. Note that the prose section at the bottom of the chapter is rated R for Spuffy smut.

Top 5 Covers of the Buffy Theme in 2020

Starting from the more straightforward side and ending with 'I love whatever the heck this is'.

Drum cover by Adam Turner (I like seeing what the drummer is doing)
String quartet version by Bowjangles (don't miss the costumes and faces!)
Doomer cover by CassiniProjekt (atmospheric!)
BtVS and AtS theme piano mashup by Andrew Wu (so impressive!)
BtVS theme in the style of Vulfpeck by Gazzerazz (my favorite, honestly)

Five great vids from 2020

Happy Halloween folks. We’re now onto the recs for fandom creativity that has happened since last year’s [livejournal.com profile] buffyversetop5. I’ve noticed a lot of great vids this year, so here’s the first of two 2020 vid posts

Welcome to the Jungle by ethereal. This is a beautifully edited Ensemble vid with an emphasis on Buffy for obvious reasons!

Excerpt: "transformation and redemption become harder, more interesting problems when you try to solve them with characters that actively resist those narratives."
