Spike Vs Santa Claus: the Rematch by shapinglight
One-shot, post-The Harm's Way, PG-13. On the Christmas eve, Spike recognizes real Santa Claus (the one who kills children, according to Anya - and Joss!) under the mask of the Santa impersonator who was invited to W&H Christmas party to entertain employees' kids... There are twists, surprises and a lot of sharp observations re: Angel/Spike dynamics. The plotting is tight, the details are funny, and Spike/Angel banter is spot-on. The Rematch is a sequel to The Night Before Christmas, writer's first story about Spike's face-off with evil Santa in Sunnydale.

Some gentle reminders and trivia

We've passed the halfway mark in this session of Top 5 and it's been wonderful seeing all the great recs that have been posted! We hope to see lots more in the week to come. Your mods would also like to give everyone a nudge towards the posting guidelines as a reminder of a few details, such as including ratings in your recs and keeping this session for 2008 items (new or continuing) only. We'll be having Classic Recs again this October for all other years. Feel free to ask any questions about Top 5 and posting, we'll be glad to answer them!

5 Rare Pairings That Made Me Believe

Believe in what, you may ask? Believe in the possibility. There were so many characters between BtVS and AtS who just missed their chances with each other and even more still that didn't get a fair shake or were gone within an episode. This post lists some of the best rare pairings and, in some cases, truly unexpected pairings that writers tackled this year using the seeds of the relationships we were given on the show. In no particular order:

1. Fresh by eurydice72 
Faith/Lindsey, R, AtS S2
Summary: You don't quit Wolfram & Hart without being smart about it...

Review: This twosome got a grand spanking total of one shared scene together in the entire series in the AtS S1 episode "5x5." Not a whole lot to go on, truthfully. But Eurydice does it and does it well. Although she's best known for her Spuffy work, Eurydice's rare pairing and ensemble characterization is just a strong as her Spuffy, which is a rare and wonderful thing. I'll be the first to admit that I'm no Lindsey fan, but this one shot definately makes you wish that the possibility between he and Faith had turned to a reality.

5 Bangel Fics (That Even A Spuffy Shipper Can Love)

At least, this Spuffy shipper did. Love them or hate them, Buffy/Angel was the 'ship that started it all and I have nothing but respect for it because of how it influenced the characters' journies, their choices over the course of the show, and their future relationships. As it turns out, I like my Bangel the same way I like my Spuffy - with lots of angst. A majority of the following fics go AU from canon at some point, are creative, hauntingly beautiful and well written. You won't find any cotton candy romance here.

1. and every breath we drew was (hallelujah) by biggrstaffbunch 
Hard R, covers BtVS S3 - AtS S5
Summary: Angel, Buffy, and reunion. Happy endings don't come easy. Sometimes they don't come at all. Six times our star-cross'd lovers never made it to their final act.

Review: I love thoughtful, canon character studies and this is one of the best I've seen. You not only come away understanding Buffy and Angel as a pairing better, but also as individuals who are deeply flawed. The writer alternates between POVs in each vignette using the 2nd person, which could be distancing or confusing, but only adds to the intimacy and sad reflection these characters undergo in this piece. Her prose is beautiful, dramatic, and captivating as she takes us through some pivotal moments in the Bangel relationship. She's the type of writer I look at and wonder, "Where have you been all my life?" Clearly dabbeling in the Bangel waters, that's where.

Review: Talk about bang for your buck. Snickelish takes one facet of Oz's personality - his ever changing hair color - and goes the distance with it by digging deep and creating a backstory that does a lot to shed some light on a character whose past and inner workings were barely even touched on in canon. I felt very satisfied after reading this and more than once thought, "Yes. That makes so much sense." Creative, deep, and somewhat sad, this shot definately makes you wonder what other hidden worlds there are to explore within Buffy and Angel's large ensemble cast.

Five Spuffel (Spike/Buffy/Angel) fics

Buffy, Angel and Spike ideally complement each other whether they fight or make love or try to live together without killing each other. Unfortunately there aren't many fics about the Royal Three nowadays - my guess is that the famous threesome panel in Buffy comics left nothing to imagination. Still, there are insightful fics (not necessarity NC-17) about Buffy, Angel and Spike, their ultra-complicated relationship and their attempts at harmony in the middle of chaos. The stories listed here are varied - there is a plotty epic story, a snarky, no-holds-barred parody and several character studies during different stages of heroes' journeys.
