Five Favorite Fics

1) Beer Good Foamy wrote a crossover between Buffy and Welcome to Night Vale Radio Silence that outdoes even the usual awesomeness of a Beer Good story.
The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the crisscrossing, interlocking, violently conflicting paths of other equally righteous men. Welcome to Night Vale.

2) A drabble Born in Fire by il-mio-capitano.
“This blade is suitable for a warrior, Englishman. I did not believe you capable of such skill, but you have learnt well. I trust your Slayer will give it a worthy name.”

3) Baudown's drabble When in Doubt, Make a List
There's a visual element; go take a look.

4) Baudown's drabble Parlour Games.
No one had bothered to look for him. He hadn't been missed, at all.

5) BoneDry1013's rewrite of Buffy's origin and seasons with metas: Origins/Seasons
Sunlight was streaming brightly from the window in the door, and in it she could see the dust dancing. She suddenly realized how dark it was here, and that the roaring was gone. It was completely silent

She looked around again. Her friends were still talking, or their mouths were moving, but they weren't saying anything, and in the darkness she could hardly see them.

She stood.

You need to know...

Again she tucked her hair back. She was afraid, but she didn't know why. “What do I need to know?”

“Buffy, where are you going?” a closer, more human voice asked.

She paused. She'd been walking toward the door and the bright, bright light. “Out there,” she said, pointing.

Tisha glanced that way, then looked back. “Why?”

“Because...” she murmured, but she didn't finish the thought. She approached the door, then pressed her hand to the cold steel.

You need to know...

She didn't ask what this time.

The door opened silently, and she walked out into the desert, squinting in the light. She was barefoot, and the sand was cool on her feet. She seemed to sink into it as she walked.

Two is brilliantly funny. Thanks for reccing three, it was number six on my baudown drabble list!

I'll look forward to catching up with the rest.

That scene from [livejournal.com profile] bone_dry1013's Origins just might be one of my favorite passages in all of Buffy fanfiction - the idea that Buffy would become aware of her calling via a Slayer dream before Merrick even finds her is both amazing and, "oh, of course it would work that way; why didn't Joss think of that?"

Also it reminds me of a Dr Who episode w/ the 7th Doctor and Ace. Good times.

I'm trying to remember which one was the bowtie doctor?

- here's #7 (Sylvester McCoy) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seventh_Doctor)

Read the section on his personality, which almost reads as a description of Giles and Buffy: he started off as comical and bumbling but developed a much more complex, darker nature, often hiding things from his companion Ace (with whom he has a surrogate father-daughter relationship) for "her own good". My friends and I loved # 7 at the time (the show was airing in close to "real time" in the US when we were watching it in the '90's) in part because of his relationship with Ace and the way two of of #7's seasons focused on what it meant to be a timelord, and on a complicated history arc for Ace with definite feminist themes.

In fact, bonedry's scene reminds me very much of one of my favorite scenes in which Ace meets a female warrior; although she hadn't seen the episode before writing Origins.

Now I want to do a rewatch, and see if I'd still enjoy it as much as I did then - and since I have Netflix and time on my hands I might as well. Just from my memories as well as the description in the Wikipedia article I can see the parallels with Giles and Buffy, but differences as well. (Seven and Ace are a more traditional father-daughter dynamic, as she is more dependent on him, has no "powers" or esoteric knowledge of her own; somewhat different to Buffy and Giles.)

The special effects were definitely cheesy as befits old-school Dr Who.

Wow, thanks so much for listing me! (as I furtively sit here with so much unfinished fic)

And oh my god, that Welcome to Night Vale cross is the best thing ever...I'm so glad you brought this to my attention, and I'm only partway through.

I just finished it and it was great (and hilarious)! I can never quite put my finger on what makes WtNV so compelling (and I've never read fan scripts before). All I know is that twice a month I get super duper excited for the broadcast.

So thanks for putting the word out!

Thanks again for the rec!

And I really need to read BoneDry's fic, I think.
