5 great 2023 Summer of Giles fics
I think we're now in the Flash Forward part of the season to highlight fanworks from 2023. So to that end here's my usual round up of five fics that caught my eye at this year's summer_of_giles. I love that the great and venerable SoG is still active and it gives me great joy to participate every year.
Only the Worthy byil_mio_capitano is a great piece of Giles, Spike snark, in which our heroes try to work out how to release a sacred dagger from the hands of a mummy without triggering the curse. Don’t you hate it when you’re in that position? This is loads of fun and Giles and Spike bitching about their lot in life is gold.
23Murasaki offered up some excellent crack with A Matter of Mothballs. There’s a horde of giant moths on the loose on the Hellmouth (of course there is!) so it’s up to our plucky gang to do something about it and for Wesley to panic because that’s what Wesley on the Hellmouth does.
And there’s more lovely stuff from 23Murasaki in The Old Man and the Cat. If you every thought the zombie cat in ‘Dead Man’s Party got short shrift then this is the story for you. I love it that authors can still find original ways to write about peripheral characters.
Listen to the Mockingbird by Aadler is a fascinating battle of wills between Dru and Giles. If you like dark Giles you’ll really enjoy this one.
It’s always bugged me that Giles didn’t come back for Xander and Anya’s wedding that wasn’t. In Memento Immemores, ynyseira offers up a Tabula Rasa Giles/Anya scenario that gives me credible headcanon for Giles not wanting to be at the wedding.
As always, this is just a sample so I’d encourage people to go over to the SoG community on DW or A03 and check out the rest of the goodies.
