5 Firefly Fics
What? No exclusively Firefly love so far? Inconceivable! Let me fix that!
1. five times mal reynolds didn't kiss inara serra (and the one time he did) by
wordsthatfail (Mal/Inara - PG) - This was
wordsthatfail’s very first Firefly fic, and she completely knocked it out of the park. Absolutely spot-on character voices--Mal sounds like Mal, not somebody's idea of a cowboy, and Inara is the perfect blend of cool and warm, just like on the show. Best of all,
wordsthatfail captures that beautiful, infuriating angst that defines the relationship between these two: two people torturing themselves with loving each other. Definitely worth reading. And please review--I'd love to encourage her to write more in this fandom!
2. Lift by
snickfic (River-centric/Gen - PG) - The ridiculously talented
snickfic proves her versatility and mastery of craft once again with this striking and unique story. In an absolutely brilliant voice—painfully rational, heartbreakingly fractured—she dives into River’s head. This fic is also a crossover of sorts with, of all things, Roald Dahl’s Matilda. But don’t let the unconventionality of the crossover or your lack of familiarity stop you from reading it: she blends the two canons so beautifully that there’s no gap between them.
3. Seek Ye First by Fair-Ithil (Genish, Mal/Inara implied - PG-13) - I've been reading the incredibly versatile Fair-Ithil's fic for years, following her from fandom to fandom. But her Firefly fic is something really special, and this year she had two pieces, both focusing on Mal and Inara. "Seek Ye First" was completely unexpected and unique. It'll hit you hard, and after scenes of beautiful sorrow the ending, and the hope it gives, feels like a gift. Truly one of a kind.
4. Half Life by Fair-Ithil (Mal/Inara - PG-13) - "Half Life" on the other hand, grapples with the question of what it would be like if Mal and Inara were ever actually together--and Inara continued in her chosen profession. That's not a scenario often explored in Firefly fic, but it's a question that needs to be answered, and nobody could have done a better job than Fair-Ithil. She doesn't flinch from the grittiness of the situation, but she finds the beauty as well (as she always does).
5. we break the sky (a thousand times before we get there) by
that_september (PG - Mal/Inara) - Like
wordsthatfail,
that_september wrote her first Firefly fic this year. The world is different in a thousand little ways after the events of Serenity, and
that_september touches on many of them, focusing especially on Mal and Inara. Her Mal perspective is very strong, and the dialogue rings very true. A lovely, hopeful piece.
And if anyone's thinking of compiling some more lists and needs some inspiration, might I suggest more crossover fic? Because I love it!
