These are very different fics, from hilarious to angsty there's something for everyone, but they are all good for a quick read, all between ~600 and ~2,300 words. All rated PG13 and less.

Requiem for a Poodle by zabjade
A week after Chosen, Buffy thinks about unlikely heroes. Angsty, bittersweet, but wonderfully written. 590 words.

Five stories featuring Dracula, because it seems appropriate for the season. Mostly comedy. (I know, poor count would be appalled).

...Or May I Call You Buffy? by MarcusRowland. Dracula is writing to Buffy. From hell. Because some guys clearly don't know when to stop.

Movie Night by [livejournal.com profile] dragonyphoenix (or here is AO3 link). Buffy, at the movies in Transylvania, runs into an old... well, friend isn't quite the right word.

Some classic Mr. Gordo stories, because he deserves it (and also because [livejournal.com profile] red_satin_doll requested =)

I'd love to say I'm so nice that I deliberately fulfilled [livejournal.com profile] red_satin_doll's request, but I just happend to have the same idea. Still, here you go.

1. A Nice Little Business by Lilachigh - Alice Pringle. Sounds like an OC, doesn’t she, but no, technically she fits this category. In the author’s words: the vampire lady referred to by Spike in The Replacement, when, sarcastically, he tells the Scoobies that he has been having a cup of tea with the lady who runs a tea-stall in the local garbage dump.
The rest of the recs went to The Bronze for Disco Night )

I became inspired by [livejournal.com profile] red_satin_doll's classic recs wishlist. Among other things, she asked for rare pairs, Mr. Gordo, stories that explore the POV of voiceless victims, and overlooked characters. Some of these stories do double, or even triple duty!

1. Little Red Riding Hood, by Circe -- This is a rare pair, and an overlooked character, and it's from the POV of a voiceless victim. And it's fantastic. Spike/Janice

2. Stars and Crosses, by Emelye -- This is definitely a rare pair; it fits in another wished for category as well, but I'm not saying more -- there's a surprise, and it made me grin from ear to ear when I first read it.

3. Untitled ficlet, by Anna S -- This one explains itself: Spike/Lorne (the ficlet is in the second half of the linked post)

4. The Wall Series, be Debechan,Teland, and TheSpike -- Xander/Ethan -- this qualifies as a rare pair, right? Dark and dirty.

5. Domestic Bliss, by nomelon -- Spike/Riley, which I think qualifies as a rare pair, too. This is a must-read, even if you think this pairing is a non-starter for you (as it was for me, until I read it, and then WOW). It's original and captivating and emotional and hot. Trust me on this one.

I can't top the Narwhal!verse (how did I not now about this?) but here are five fics that made the crackfic fan in me grin like a loon this year.

Based on a True Story by Oxnate. Mayor Richard Wilkins III isn't afraid of anything... but his shadow. Of all the werecreatures in the world, here's a hole I haven't seen anyone poke their head out of before.

I do this every year, so why break with tradition? Here are five amazing stories that feature Willow as a central figure.

1) Sewing the Seeds (missing scene from The Beating of the Bounds) (Willow, The Tailor) by [livejournal.com profile] sparrow2000: If all this does is get you to read the incredible The Beating of the Bounds, a Xander-centric AU of superlative depth and artistry, then my work is done. But this tale - featuring Willow - has its own brilliance and needs to be appreciated on its own terms. It's subtle and deceptively prosaic but look beneath its smooth surface and the depths are churning. Join me in ordering Sparrow to write more Willow. She has a knack for it.

Well, I said that I would probably have to do a second set of Gen recs, because there had been so much good stuff last year, so here it is.

Letters Never Sent (the Crumpled Sheets Remix) by [livejournal.com profile] nothorse just killed me. Xander tries to write to Jesse’s parents. I defy you not to at least sniffle a bit with this one. This is a remix of [livejournal.com profile] texanfan’s equally great Lonely Burden.

Five non-scary (and mostly non-dark) stories for the Halloween. Arranged from shortest to longest (though even the longest one is just about 1800 words.)

1. I can't imagine ever excluding Beer Good Foamy's The True Spirit of Christmas from this list. I adore how this story plays off of the Bing Crosby / David Bowie holiday vid.

Vengeance is Mine by hufflepuffsneak (PG, gen, crossover with Marvel's Avengers, mentions of child abuse) - “Hey, I’m Natalie.” Natasha gave a name close to the truth, the child deserved that, but she hadn’t been a successful vengeance demon for the past six decades by handing out her true name to just anyone. (EDIT: Yay, the link is now working properly!)

So who here doesn't like rec lists? That's what I thought. I try to keep track of good fic for characters that aren't part of the core group, both here and at [livejournal.com profile] fantas_magoria. Here are a few of my favorites, in order of appearance:

Lydia Chalmers, Watcher — Lydia first appeared in Checkpoint, and made Watcherdom adorable. Presumed dead in the bombing of the Council by the First.

Buffybot — Introduced in Intervention, this charming creation can do comedy and tragedy with equal panache. Destroyed by Hellions.

Holden Webster, Vampire — A one-episode vampire who gets to Buffy in entirely new ways. Risen and dusted in the course of Conversations with Dead People, but not forgotten

Harmony, Vampire Personal Assistant — AtS Season 5 Harmony is the poster girl for "Evil, Soulless Things Try Harder". Still ticking, but without, you know, a heartbeat.

Dana, Slayer — Our first hint that the Slayer Empowerment Spell wasn't going to cure all ills. Dana only appeared in Damage, but we know her existence is creating ripples throughout the Slayer organization.

Be sure to check the comments of each post for additional links!

Was there ever a show so perfectly suited to the genus crossoverus? I think not.

Whatever Remains, However Improbable by yonwords (PG)
Victor and Sierra are imprinted as Holmes and Watson, but the engagement does not go as planned. (Does it ever?)

Backwards, and in Heels by sobsister (PG13)
Crossover with Better Off Ted (highly recommended, btw) in which Adelle and Veronica (think Sue Sylvester in a power suit) are after the same pair of Manolo Blaniks.

Tarocchi Appropriati (The Butterfly Dies in LA remix) by [livejournal.com profile] duh_i_read  (PG13)
Also read the fic this was remixed from: The Most Important Kiss He’d Ever Know by [livejournal.com profile] prlrocks  (PG13)
Dru sends Spike after one of the Dollhouse's tastiest morsels.

Echoes of the Past (Holographic Businesswoman Remix) by Alixtii (PG13)
Shepard Book and Mr. Universe do some digging into River’s little problem, and find the Dollhouse at the core.

Of Ill-Advised Imprints and Rather Fetching Ewok Queens by lirazel ([livejournal.com profile] penny_lane_42 ) (PG13)

S5 - Scoobies, almost-OCs
Vampire plague is about to, er, plague Sunnydale, and the Scoobies are on the case -- as are the Korean Slayer of 1933 and her gumshoe sidekick Sid. Excellent character voices, but what I love most about this fic are Sid and Cho, whom I'd happily read whole fics about. Barbara Stanwyck glamour and the Slayer burden, plus Sid "cracking wise": what's not to like?

A Lorne Thing (PG)

Pitch perfect Lorne spills his woes to a sympathetic bartender in season five. Written as if you're the bartender talking to Lorne, its a real treat to read vivicious' Lorne's story. Its set in season five and Lorne's descriptions of Angel's crew is hilarious. It also features a delightfully demonic appearance from Sweet.

My Sword Is My Song (PG-13)

Lorne is a survivor, dramatically dressed and ready with a sea breeze, but always ready to land on his feet. This fic shows in a sad yet understated way how Lorne moves on in post-NFA LA.

Same Time Next Year (Lorne/Fred, G)

A sadden Lorne completes an annual ritual to mourn Fred. This ficlet tugs at your heart strings and shows a vulnerable and romantic side of Lorne.

Lorne's List of No (PG)

Funny list of songs that Lorne never wants to hear again.

Nothing Goes Away (Lorne & Faith, PG-13)

Lorne tries to take care of Faith in New York City in this gritty fic with heart about a slayer and a demon looking to atone for their pasts in the big apple. The point of view is perfectly Faith but Lorne shines as her link to the PTB and confidante.
