These are very different fics, from hilarious to angsty there's something for everyone, but they are all good for a quick read, all between ~600 and ~2,300 words. All rated PG13 and less.

Requiem for a Poodle by zabjade
A week after Chosen, Buffy thinks about unlikely heroes. Angsty, bittersweet, but wonderfully written. 590 words.

[livejournal.com profile] sb_fag_ends is a community for posting short Spuffy works. This is my second post of excellent drabbles and ficlets.

Prague by [livejournal.com profile] drizzlydaze (729 words)
The Council sends Wishverse!Buffy to Prague to intercept Spike and Drusilla just as the mob is closing in. It’s… fascinating.

Facing the Monster by [livejournal.com profile] snogged: What if Spike found Xander after the events of “Reptile Boy?” Deliciously dark.

Smoke by feathers-and-cigarettes: Set in BtVS S10. Xander smoking weed.

Frame of Reference by [livejournal.com profile] baudown: This fic shows why I love Spander so much. Both Xander and Spike are equal.

Special Occasion by feathers-and-cigarettes: Xander is throwing Spike a surprise birthday party.

Notes by feathers-and-cigarettes: Spike is leaving notes for Xander in poetry form.

Bonus Drabble:

Temptation by [livejournal.com profile] strickens_girl: This is the funniest and hottest threesome out there.

Five stories featuring Dracula, because it seems appropriate for the season. Mostly comedy. (I know, poor count would be appalled).

...Or May I Call You Buffy? by MarcusRowland. Dracula is writing to Buffy. From hell. Because some guys clearly don't know when to stop.

Movie Night by [livejournal.com profile] dragonyphoenix (or here is AO3 link). Buffy, at the movies in Transylvania, runs into an old... well, friend isn't quite the right word.

Some favorite gen stories of the past year, arranged from shortest to longest.

Distractions by [livejournal.com profile] il_mio_capitano (Giles, Xander, PG). A library horror drabble that could really give you chills.

Parent Traps by [livejournal.com profile] aliceinkinkland (Willow, Anya, Xander, Tara, G). After "The Gift," Willow, Tara, Xander, and Anya discuss how they’re going to raise Dawn without turning into their own not-so-perfect parents.

I tried to pick fics that [livejournal.com profile] sparrow2000 didn't rec already but I had to mention [livejournal.com profile] aadler's awesome remix.

All the tender sweetness of a seasick crocodile by cori_the_bloody: Post-Chosen. Xander’s been reeling from all the change in his life. New city, new job…it’s all a bit overwhelming. He’s still got a lot to be thankful for, though, and his friends are determined to remind him of that fact. One-shot written for a Christmas fic exchange.

Five of my favorite parody fics, arranged from shortest to longest.

Spike's Fury by [livejournal.com profile] coalitiongirl. Buffy, Angel, Spike, PG-13. The alternate ending of season 8 comics. Much better than canon one.

My final post from the [livejournal.com profile] sb_fag_ends Edgar Allen Poe Halloween Challenge. Sorry if all my posts to the comm this year have been a bit same-y, but my fandom time in 2014 was very limited. Also, it would be wrong not to rec some of the other contributors to the challenge, all of whom were absolutely brilliant.

Enjoy. Then go and seek out their other ficlets and read those too.

"..." by [livejournal.com profile] thisficklemob. PG. A silence demon targets the Scoobies in season 7. 349 words. For the prompt: Silence.

Some favorite gen short stories from 2014 (and the hardest part here was to chose just 5).
Any bad English in summaries is mine and shouldn't be blamed on fic authors.

Building Character by [livejournal.com profile] beer_good_foamy (Ensemble, PG-13). Unusual version of "Buffy came back wrong" and at the same time - genial meta-story about writing fanfiction. In order to fix Buffy scoobies are "rewriting" her backstory.

Time's Fool by Lady Jane at the Bloodshedverse, or at Elysian fields (may need to register to read at EF) Spike/ Buffy "eventually NC17" though it hasn't gotten there yet.

Future fic. Decades down the road Spike and Buffy meet up again for the first time since Sunnydale. Plotty goodness. A really interesting and believable future for Our Heroes. Great characterizations, and believable motivations. Also, the author gets the medical details right. I appreciate that! Warning: still a WIP

For Want of A Back Porch by [livejournal.com profile] gryfndor_godess
http://gryfndor-godess.livejournal.com/72632.html
PG. Completed, ~21,000 words. Post-season 8. Spike's occasional visits to Buffy's place are all about business, aren't they? :) [livejournal.com profile] gryfndor_godess focuses on Buffy and Spike's tentative, small steps towards each other; her story is poignant, funny, with outrageous breaks through the fourth wall. ( The story was written a year ago, when fandom tried to guess what happens to Buffy and Spike in season 9; after the last batch of spoilers this story reads as a nostalgic "what-if").

1) Mark Watches Buffy the Vampire Slayer by Mark: This is the new hottest thing with fandom right now. He's a Buffy virgin, totally unspoiled, which is why his reviews are so popular. For example, he didn't know Angel was a vampire. His enthusiasm and insight are also reasons for his popularity. It's so fun watching him guess and get shocked and squeal at everything. He also gets a lot of comments from fans who watched and didn't watch the show.

PG-13. WIP. Start of season 9. Xander dreamed about normal life when he couldn't have it. Now magic is dead, vampires are showbiz darlings and slayers are considered murderers. In this new strange world Xander tries to live a life of an average Joe, but it's hard to stay away from the good fight. Xander/Dawn, Xander/Spike, ensemble. Plotty, occasionally funny, occasionally heartbreaking story of a man caught between two worlds.

Season 8 was a wild ride that made mostly everybody at least a little bit queasy, though it ended with a much appreciated whimper. Season 9 started off fairly evenly, though there's probably a bumpy road ahead. Grab your barf bags!

Here are five post-Season 8 #40 fics (and a bonus!) from three of my favorite fic writers that are filling in the blanks, bending canon to their will, and even throwing canon out the proverbial window. And you don't necessarily need to acknowledge the existence of the comics to enjoy them.

Caught in a Bad Romance....a meta of Buffy's Romantic Relationships by [livejournal.com profile] shadowkat67
http://shadowkat67.livejournal.com/506872.html
Spike is S6 reminds me a great deal of that metaphor. Their dance feels like a dance between life and death. Buffy wants to die, she is literally dancing with death, over and over again she throws herself into its arms, but death can't take her - because in doing so, death extinguishes the very thing he wants to possess. It's a bad romance - both characters can't have what they want. Buffy wants death. Spike wants life. She wants the fire, but doesn't want to be burned. He wants it to, and seems not to care if he gets burned. This can't end well.

Strangers by [livejournal.com profile] lusciousxander
http://www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=lusciousxander&keyword=Strangers+%28Buffy/Spike%29&filter=all
~ 83,000 words. PG. Starts in the eighth season of BtVS, in February 2005. Buffy, Xander and their Slayers are living in a castle in Scotland. Grief pushes Buffy and Xander to do something really stupid: they have consolation sex, Buffy ends up pregnant and eventually gives birth to a girl. Things get more complicated when she discovers that Spike is no longer dead. Earnest, detailed exploration of Buffy's dilemmas in season 8, this story is simultaneously epic and intimate.

Almost done, folks! It seems I saved most of the genfics for last. Here are five, all fairly short, about Buffy Summers.

1. The Last Fingers of Leaf, by [livejournal.com profile] quinara

Buffy and Illyria. A dragon. Pizza. Combined, they’re an unexpected pleasure as the two find commonalities that I’d never have thought of. Poignant and elegantly written.
