I did my list of comedy fics that made me giggle in 2016, so here now is a list of five pretty angsty dramatic fics that made me go wow, I wish I’d written that.

First up is [livejournal.com profile] aadler’s There Ought to be Clowns (The Lying Eyes Remix). Buffy makes Xander a ‘no strings’ offer and Xander accepts. Funny how it becomes impossible to say what you really want once you’ve got what you asked for. I really loved the complicated Buffy characterisation in this story – it’s the road not taken, but feels very true to her character. And the use of repetition is an especially effective bell in her brain. Really good stuff.

Drops breadcrumbs to more lovely slices of storytelling… )

Five favorite scary stories. Just keep in mind that some of these go with major character death warning. Won't tell which ones, because I'm evil like that. And because spoilers.

Truly and Forever by [livejournal.com profile] thuviaptarth. What if Willow managed to resurrect Tara? Rated NC-17, and not exactly for the smut.

Open on Sunday hasn’t had a post since July. As a memorial, I found five great - I went through a bunch but I didn’t read them all -  drabbles written for an Open on Sunday prompt.

1. [livejournal.com profile] punch_kicker15’s If You Are What You Say You Are because I’m a sucker for a happy ending.

2. [livejournal.com profile] romanyg’s Woman of Property because I’m also a sucker for angst

3. [livejournal.com profile] beer_good_foamy’s Advant Gardener because no one writes humor like Beer Good Foamy

4. [livejournal.com profile] baudown’s Parlour Games because awesome Spander

5. [livejournal.com profile] nihilistbear’s Kiss from “Once More With Feeling” because ouch!

And while I’m here, the first prompt since April has recently been posted at Giles Shorts. Go. Write.

1. Brace Yourself by Enigmatic Blue. Spike / Buffy. A rewrite  of season 6 where Buffy more easily accepts her attraction to Spike. A ritual to free Spike of a curse has unexpected consequences. And, given this category, I’m pretty sure you know what those consequences are. *grin*

the rest of the recs listened to sappy 80s love songs and are balling their eyes out )

I'd love to say I'm so nice that I deliberately fulfilled [livejournal.com profile] red_satin_doll's request, but I just happend to have the same idea. Still, here you go.

1. A Nice Little Business by Lilachigh - Alice Pringle. Sounds like an OC, doesn’t she, but no, technically she fits this category. In the author’s words: the vampire lady referred to by Spike in The Replacement, when, sarcastically, he tells the Scoobies that he has been having a cup of tea with the lady who runs a tea-stall in the local garbage dump.

Some of my favorite past year's long fic, arranged from shortest to longest.

signifying nothing by [livejournal.com profile] kwritten (Dawn-centric, PG-13, ~31 000 words). Season six character study. After her sister's death and resurrection, Dawn grapples with her own humanity and tenuous grasp on reality; as her depression swings her from reckless to numb, she reaches out to new friends for help and a new perspective.

Yes, I know that everything [livejournal.com profile] sparrow2000 writes is excellent, but here are my top five picks from the past year:

1. No Lodging is probably me favorite fic of the year. It's tragic and haunting, and the language and imagery just stayed with me.

2. Words to Live By is a fascinating and original look at Xander in one of his darker moments.

3. One of These Days is a little slice of Giles' and Ethan's history. It's now head canon for me.

4. Pushing Limits is Xander/Lindsey pre-slash. Xander's living for the moment. At least, for the moment.

5. Distraction is Spike/Xander. A slice of their life together, and the voices are absolutely perfect.

Some favorite Dawn and Spike shortfic of the past year. Stories arranged from shortest to longest.

Some of my favorite Tara-centric shortfic of the past year, arranged from shortest to longest.

Same Mistakes by [livejournal.com profile] aliceinkinkland (Buffy/Tara, PG-13). Inspired by Whedon quote, where he admitted considering having the Powers That Be grant Buffy a wish at the end of Chosen to bring Tara back.
As you already guessed from the title, it's not a fluffy story, and a lot of painfully accurate parallels are made.

Or, it's "Buffy-centric angsty shortfic", to be more specific. Stories arranged from longest to shortest.

Third Wheel by [livejournal.com profile] shapinglight aka Glassdarkly (Angel/Buffy & Darla, PG-13). Set during 'Surprise', this is a slightly AU BtVS season 2, in which Ethan Rayne's costume spell in Halloween had rather different consequences.
I'm a sucker for relationship studies where main focus is not romance per se but Buffy's development, and this one absolutely nails it.

Since people seemed quite taken with the first set here are five more, probably better known than the first set.

Living History by LizMarcs
Rating: PG, Worksafe
Some people have come from a place far, far away and a time far, far ahead to ask for help on an urgent matter. The time they were aiming for? February 2008. The place? Moscow. The problem? Somehow they've ended up in Cleveland, September 2003. And that’s just the beginning of the trouble; they seem to be descendants of the Scoobies and are determined not to change the past... but they haven't reckoned with Xander. Superbly written with a fascinating plot, some of the most beautifully crafted OCs I've ever seen and a wonderful portrayal of Xander and Faith. Very highly recommended!

The Lion Laying Down With The Lambness Of Xander And Larry by [livejournal.com profile] reremouse: Xander/Larry. What I'd pay to see the conclusion to this one? The Xander voice is perfection. The HP 'verse is the commonest one for fics where the author re-writes history by inserting a character (internal or external) who knows what's supposed to happen and is determined to change things but the Buffy 'verse has its examples too...

1. Martian Manhunter by Mediancat
Rating: PG, Worksafe
As the result of a bet that we spend most of the story waiting to find out the nature of, Veronica Mars is in the Buffyverse, knowing what's coming and unable to do anything about it... or can she? If you're familiar with mediancat's work then you're probably already anticipating wonderful writing. If you're a fan of the Veronica Mars series then look no further: this is for you! :-)

I've already focused on some of [livejournal.com profile] kwritten's Buffy/Tara fics in my last rec post; here's more by various authors focusing on Tara herself rather than as half of a ship:

The Real You by [livejournal.com profile] brutti_ma_buoni (Tara, Dawn, mentions of Buffy and ensemble, S5-S6?); for [livejournal.com profile] eilowyn: Tara spends some time, that summer, trying to work out when Dawn became. Too few fics explore Tara's relationship with Dawn but also Tara's skill as a witch in her own right. This fills a need; satisfying and poignant.

Filling Holes by [livejournal.com profile] foxstarreh (Tara, implied W/T, canon-compliant S6, post-Once More With Feeling) There's this hole in her head.

Her Own also by [livejournal.com profile] foxstarreh (Tara, implied W/T, canon-compliant S6, between Tabula Rasa and Smashed.) Tara moves out of Revello and back to campus. Some of Tara's things are Willow's and she leaves those behind. Both of Fox's drabbles are incredibly haunting.

The Things You Find in Vending Machines by the ininimitable [livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip (Tara, Buffy, canon-compliant S4, post-New Moon Rising). This was written as a gift to me in return for the banner I'd made for her amazing fic "Soft and Pink and Very Sad"  ; a deleted scene that reminds me how hungry I am for more Buffy and Tara friendship scenes. Oh great. Not only is Buffy officially a dork, but Tara looks like a deer caught in the headlights, so now Buffy feels guilty… and still wigged out.

Eagles on the Wind by [livejournal.com profile] kerkevik_2014 (Tara/ Faith, post-series) Another gift for me; sly, sensual, confident Tara taking the lead with a Slayer whose cocky attitude doesn't mask her nerves or her fear of intimacy? YES, PLEASE.
"Aren't we gonna screw?"   /
Tara tutted at Faith; slowly undoing the buttons on her new wife's dress.

Some favorite complete longfics from the past years.
Any bad English in summaries is mine and shouldn't be blamed on fic authors.

Gently Down the Stream by [livejournal.com profile] shadowscast (Ensemble, with some Buffy/Spike, PG-13). Here's Buffy's life in a nutshell: dead mom, dead-beat dad, dead end job, dependent sister. She's pulling double shifts at the Double Meat Palace to make ends meet.
And yet, she's actually pretty happy! She's got supportive friends and a sexy English boyfriend. Her life is full of love, and frankly after that accident last year and the coma, she's grateful just to be alive.
Oh, and the main point - it's NOT all-human AU.

Building Character by [livejournal.com profile] beer_good_foamy (Ensemble, PG-13). Unusual version of "Buffy came back wrong" and at the same time - genial meta-story about writing fanfiction. In order to fix Buffy scoobies are "rewriting" her backstory.

Okay, here I am too! I wish to thank everyone who recommended other fics, especially the Spangel ones. I know some of them, since I did some time lurking the English fandom but saying nothing (Because I didn't know how to write), but it's really nice to discover other classics. It makes me feel part of the group.

So, my list: 5 fics with Spike as major character I love so much (There are too many Spike-centric fics in this fandom that I love and it's hard to pick just 5)

Beggars would Ride by [livejournal.com profile] wiseacress This is one of the first Spike/Angel fics I've ever read. It's painful, dark and gorgeously written. I love the dynamic between Angel and Spike and how they hurt each others. I'm a sucker for Spangel h/c.

19 Hours by Annie Sewell-Jennings. First English Spuffy fic. Just glorious. It's a post Chosen fic, it's Spike/Buffy-centric and there is a lot of glorious happy sex involved. If you love Spike and Buffy together you have to read this.

To Come Home To by [livejournal.com profile] snickfic Recently discovered and it's a series. Again with the Spuffy post-Chosen kinda happy place. This one is also about mpreg and believe me when I say that it's the greatest thing ever.

Stick Shift by [livejournal.com profile] stultiloquentia Spike. Buffy. Pegging. Hot. If you like hot Spuffy porn this is the thing for you.

A Raising in the Sun by [livejournal.com profile] rahirah I guess that everybody knows this one. It's actually my favorite part of the saga. I love it because it really feels S6-like and it's all Spike's POV and it's excellent.
[identity profile] rebcake.livejournal.com
Spike and Xander are a great odd couple, if you like that sort of thing. Obviously lots of people do like it, and here is just a small sampling of some of the classics of the genre, in order of length:

Rehearsal by [livejournal.com profile] thebratqueen
A S4 basement of doom story in which Spike gives Xander instruction on the proper delivery of dirty talk. Pre-slash.
On LJ / On Author's Site / On Spanderfiles

Hilarity ensues... )

All of these meta posts are part of a "series" (minimum of two entries) in which at least one entry was posted in 2013.

Dawn Summers: Fighting for an Alternative Feminist Narrative - by [livejournal.com profile] kwritten This link takes you to "part 4" (really 5 parts including the introduction), which in turn has links to all the previous entries in the series. I don't know if this is the very first meta ever written about Dawn, but it's the first one I've come across; which is astonishing when you consider her importance and impact to BtVS. Winner of Best Meta in round 10 of the No Rest for the Wicked Awards, and deservedly so.

Honestly, I could have chosen any of the ficlets [livejournal.com profile] brutti_ma_buoni posted on [livejournal.com profile] sb_fag_ends in 2013, because they're all brilliant, but here are five of my absolute favourites.

Since they're all written for prompts, make sure you read the author's notes as well as the ficlets. Needless to say, Fag Ends being a Spuffy short fics comm, all of them are Spuffy in some way.

Well...I sing, PG.

Willow is a fascinating and complex character to me, and I really enjoy fiction that reflects that. Here are five classic Willow fics. I'm going to be cautious and label them all not worksafe.

1) The Power and The Other Thing by [livejournal.com profile] mosca.Willow/Tara, Willow/Glory (not really the focus of the story) Gorgeous Wishverse story, with Nerdy Willow, Super-witch Willow, and Scary Willow all wrapped up into one. I really enjoy the way the characters from Angel were worked in. The tone is a bit chilly and remote and matches the world-building wonderfully. This is one of the most hopeful Wishverse stories I've read, but the hope seems earned. This is one of those stories that I think should get a lot more recognition than it has.

The other four below the cut )

Thought I'd better get this in quick before the comm closes. Again, no unifying theme, just five Buffyverse things I enjoyed in 2012.

Redemption - Scattered Thoughts by [livejournal.com profile] beer_good_foamy. Meta that I don't think has been recced yet, but even if it has, can't be recced often enough IMO (which also applies to BGF's masterful Buffy, the Vampire Slayer vs Buffy the Vampire Slayer).

When I posted my
first list  of "top 5" meta for the year I already knew I would do a second list, because there were too many good meta from the year to limit to just five. What I hadn't known or planned on was how neatly the two lists would fall into groupings. Where the first concerned itself with issues within the Buffyverse itself; this second set combines analysis and history with personal meditations and observations.  My response to BtVS was on first watch and continues to be a combination of emotion and intellect I haven't experienced with anything else in pop culture; and essays that reflect this complicated response and bridge the two not only touch a chord in me, they demonstrate why the story of a Slayer and her friends still matters.

"Some Willow [Rosenberg]-y Thoughts, Part 1"   by   [livejournal.com profile] local_max    The brief self-assessment at the beginning of this essay, followed by his usual incisive examination of Willow's arc, nearly breaks my heart; in describing himself, it feels as though he is describing me on my behalf because I lack the courage to do so. And as always, his examination of Ms Rosenberg sets me back on my heels to reconsider everything I thought I knew about her.

"Moar Buffy Meta for Mid Season 6"  by   [livejournal.com profile] coracle33
Her (I am assuming gender, with apologies) analysis of Willow and Buffy's shared addiction arc - the misdirect both characters make from from the real sources of their problems onto their addictive habits - and why it works for her is very much against the grain of general fan opinion regarding that storyline.  She argues persuasively for it nonetheless, and as another member of fandom who struggles with depression, she reminds me all over again just why S6 strikes struck a deep emotional and intellectual chord in me.  She's only written two posts, both about S6, on her LJ, but I hope for more in 2013.

"In Which I Ramble On"   by   [personal profile] rahirah .   A sharp, incisive meta about interpersonal fandom dynamics, factional divisions and the toxic results of hanging onto our own "principles" to the exclusion of respecting one another, by one of the most respected voices in this fandom. Can’t we all just get along?
The cherry on top: one of my favorite descriptions of Buffy Anne Summers, bar none.

"Being a Buffy Fan on the Internet 1998 - 2012"  by

[livejournal.com profile] shadowkat67  .  A personal response and historical timeline of nearly every major development in this fandom from the beginning: the near-simultaneous birth of BtVS and the explosion of fandom on the internet; the sites were fans congregated, celebrated and fought; every major controversy, faction and war. Recommended for cultural historians, long-time fans nostalgic for the "good old days" - or not; and newbies like myself who had no idea what they'd gotten themselves into and are trying to avoid the landmines.

"Untitled (Ruminations on Writing Fanfiction, Personal Expression, and Depression)"  by

[livejournal.com profile] angearia  This one hit me hard because I see myself in every word of it. A very personal meditation about writing in fandom, and finding small spaces of release and relief in letting the words flow on the page; the unfair stereotypes of the people who are unemployed and/or work very hard in crushing "menial" jobs just to get by; and how unemployment and depression combine to strangle creativity. Like Buffy, Emmie is full of love - and courage. Simply admitting that one is un- or underemployed (i.e. poor), or depressed, is terrifying in a world interprets both states as personal failures and moral sins. (ETA: This meta is friendslocked.)

For my very first post to this community I wanted to list some of my favorite Buffyverse meta essays of the year. Fiction seems to be the overwhelming fan vehicle of choice, at least here on LJ/DW, but it was meta essays that pulled me into this fandom. These are by no means "the best" of the year (my full list would be closer to 10 or 11 essays), but represent some that are my touchstones for this 'verse and it's fandom:

"Rules of Engagement: Violence and Hyperreality in the Buffyverse"  by  [livejournal.com profile] lostboy_lj   may be my "if you only read one meta from 2012" choice. Why Buffy and Spike's relationship in S6 is not directly analogous to abusive relationships in RL, using "Smashed" as it's focal point.

"Buffy, the Vampire Slayer vs Buffy the Vampire Slayer"  by  [livejournal.com profile] beer_good_foamy.   Most post-modernist thinky-thoughts; how the show's title represents the central problem of the narrative for it's titular protagonist, and how Buffy resolves her dilemma in "Chosen".

"Word of Willow: "Witch", Mirrors, and Mommy Issues"  by  [livejournal.com profile] local_max .   What I hope to be the first of several Willow-centric essays from someone who has plumbed the depths of Willow's character more thoroughly and compassionately than any fan I know of.

"Warren Mears"  by  [livejournal.com profile] itsnotmymind .   Draws parallels between Warren, Faith and Spike, how they mirror, intertwine and intersect thematically and within the story itself, and what they represent re: Buffy's psychology. Wonderfully complex.

"Where Did I Go? A Farewell to the Buffybot"   by  [livejournal.com profile] mcjulie .   One of the few essays I've seen in these parts about one of the Buffyverse's most memorable characters. (While I'm here, I'll note that mcjulie has also taken on the awesome task of continuing the   "Episode Polls"   and discussion where [personal profile] gabrielleabelle  left off, starting with S5's  "Tough Love".  Especially recommended is her poll and meta commentary on "The Gift".)

Time's Fool by Lady Jane at the Bloodshedverse, or at Elysian fields (may need to register to read at EF) Spike/ Buffy "eventually NC17" though it hasn't gotten there yet.

Future fic. Decades down the road Spike and Buffy meet up again for the first time since Sunnydale. Plotty goodness. A really interesting and believable future for Our Heroes. Great characterizations, and believable motivations. Also, the author gets the medical details right. I appreciate that! Warning: still a WIP

~ 83,000 words. PG. Starts in the eighth season of BtVS, in February 2005. Buffy, Xander and their Slayers are living in a castle in Scotland. Grief pushes Buffy and Xander to do something really stupid: they have consolation sex, Buffy ends up pregnant and eventually gives birth to a girl. Things get more complicated when she discovers that Spike is no longer dead. Earnest, detailed exploration of Buffy's dilemmas in season 8, this story is simultaneously epic and intimate.

1) Nothing the Same by [livejournal.com profile] orchidluv: Wow! Seriously, wow!! A long, thrilling epic! It's a rewrite of BtVS from S1 in which Jesse's death makes Xander curious about vampires. He doubts what Giles told him about Jesse being gone and replaced by a monster and starts studying and researching about vampires. The best part about this fic is how complex the characters are. There's no character bashing, just character flaws getting the best of characters, and it's nice reading the story from different, unreliable point of views. If you're a Spander fan and haven't read this, then shame on you. If you're not a Spander fan, then this is the story I recommend for you.

The fic is really long and written in four books. The link above is for book 1. And here are the links for the next books: Book 2, Book 3, and Book 4.

Note: The fic was first written in 2007 and completed in 2010. The second half of Book 4 was written in 2010.
